Magic Mardi Gras By 2008 much of the magic of Mardi Gras was back, and I welcomed it with my second Magic Mardi Gras in the poster series. The magic represented in this poster is that of entertainment, performance, display, and exhibition- with flair. The white surface onto which I sketched would become the stage for my own performance. At the same time that I was planning and painting my art, I thought of other kindred artists- float builders, mask makers, costume designers, parade planners, tee-shirt designers, fellow poster artists- and how we were all involved in the thoughtful process of trying to produce works that would awe our collective Mardi Gras audience. We are magicians of another ilk who vie to please by transforming paint, feathers, sequins, leather, beads, papier-mâché, and cosmetics to make something from nothing, called the "magic" of art.* Andrea Mistretta has been a major influence on the popularity of Mardi Gras celebrations to other parts of the US and the rest of the world. Her Mardi Gras prints are the foundation of the most successful licensing program in Mardi Gras history. Mayor Sidney Barthelemy conferred her with the title of Honorary Citizen for promoting a positive image of Mardi Gras and New Orleans through her art. Major domestic and foreign companies have enlisted her talents to promote their products and their national recognition of Mardi Gras over the last decade. Andrea Mistretta is best known for her enchanting images annually created for Mardi Gras longest running poster series. Her work is exhibited at Disney World's Port Orleans, The Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, and Harrah's Casino in New Orleans. For two decades, Andrea Mistretta's career in art has spanned advertising, editorial and book illustration. She is the recipient of awards for her art including the prestigious Alberto Vargas award and has been featured in several international art magazines. * Andrea Mistretta Mardi Gras Parade of Posters, Pelican Publishing Co 2010
