Dag: Season 1

Norwegian comedy-noir in twenty minute chunks
I discovered this low-key off-beat Norwegian comedy-drama through perusing the LOVEFILM catalogue and was immediately hooked after the first few minutes. Dag Refsnes is a relationships counsellor who believes that happiness in life is best achieved through living alone and puts into practice that which he preaches, encouraging his clients to do the same. His unique take on life (considering his chosen profession) comes not only through decades of observation of couples but also his own anxiety about social interaction, which he manages with a selective intake of Valium. His inner sanctum is the ultimate bachelor’s pad with black leather furniture, a jukebox and a wall-to-wall collection of records and DVDs. However, his attempts at isolation are thwarted by his sister (a divorced mum with a teenage son who insists on setting him up with blind dates), his sister’s friend (recently returned from India) and Benedikt (a James Corden look-a-like with morals and habits of a dog on heat). There are some jaw dropping scenes and situations which certainly push the boundaries and Dag’s therapy sessions are an absolute hoot. The humour is undoubtedly dark, absurd and peppered with philosophical observations, but there are also moments which are very affecting. The length of each episode is around 20 minutes, which is just about right since due to the intensity, speed of dialogue and subtitles at times it is a quite challenge to keep up, and I have to admit I did rewind the DVD a few times. I absolutely loved it.

A Masterclass in Darker Comedy
Dag Refsnes is a marriage/relationship counselor who generally has no time for people. He has many quirks which some of us may be able to relate too and some of his days can be chaotic which I'm sure all of us know what that feels like. This is a masterful comedy and you will be hooked. The attention to the character development is excellent as in many other Nordic series, they take in importance in telling the small stories of the characters so you start to get to know them very well. I would definitely recommend this series. There are not many comedy series that are on this level.

utterly brilliant , should be a cult classic
I love Norwegian comedy, the dark black humour and the many un pc jokes. This is a brilliant series; funny, warm, weird and totally different. One of the best programmes I have seen all year. Its about the pain of relationships , of loneliness, dating , sex and despair.

Have now watched Series 1-3 and it just keeps getting better
Am hooked, on this outrageous, charming, edgy, serious, surreal and often deepy touching comedy. Have now watched Series 1-3 and it just keeps getting better. The performances of the cast are what carries it. Brilliant.

Completely wonderful. By turns bizarre
Completely wonderful. By turns bizarre, eccentric, funny and poignant. If you liked Fleabag, Freshmeat, Green wing, then you'll love Dag.

Emetic
I watched half of one episode with my mouth open, totally appalled. A repellent man living a repellent lifestyle, with no feelings for anything or anyone But when this dreadful man threw a small dog through a window, I switched off. This is truly disgusting and I can't imagine anyone finding it funny.
