They will eventually die and need to be replaced
The Google AI will tell you these don't really have a "life".. But it's wrong. After about 6+ years they seem to be working , but they aren't.. After a day of messing with my Hunter valve, I gave up and bought a new solenoid and all the problems diapperared. I would always keep a spare on hand.

Eventually these things seem to wear out. The symptom is that the valve fails to open and close reliably. I think that it is the little seal on the end which goes. The identical unit which it replaced had seen 10 seasons After the replacement everything worked perfectly
