Be ready to read it at least twice....it is full of experience, wisdom and heart.
I found the essays showed. me so much about the writer and also about our society and culture of his time.I appreciated his honesty and vulnerability as he shared his writings.I also found the descriptions of many of the life events were very dynamic and energizing......and connected the sacred and the secular.

Erudite and enlightening
This intelligent collection of Johnson's essays includes themes on his Kentucky family, his early connection to a nearby monastery, faith, loss from AIDS, and other topics, including apt critiques of aspects of the gay community. I got a bit lost in the lengthy theological essay that compares faiths in order to find a new community, a new common language for belief. But I particularly enjoyed reading about the author's life experiences and how they inspired his fiction.
