Johnny Pail Face Becomes a Human Being

I knew Johnny personally from the Powwow Trail. He was always so friendly, always had a smile, a joke, and a hug for old friends and new ones. He spoke just a little about his life, and this book filled in a lot of his history.So much I didn't know, but so much that shows that a person is always in the drivers seat of their choices. Johnny certainly was a shinning example of someone who Made good and bad choices, but almost always making those choices with the best of intentions.I'm grateful this book speaks so eloquently about how choices make the man. Johnny Pail Face was humble, yet he was a man among men.Thank you for writing this and preserving his legacy.

A friend told me about this book that her cousin wrote. I am always up for checking out the endeavors of friends & family and their friends & family, so I obtained the Kindle edition. I spent summers in Gallup as a child as well as a few years as an adult, so Johnny's youth is close to home.This book is one part biography, one part autobiography, one part research paper, and one part historical account blended so well it is hard to know where one begins and another ends and even harder to put down.

I was captivated by the man Johnny Pail Face from the first lines, but I had no idea how much his story would move and teach me. John Jarvis has accomplished the daunting task of engaging, teaching and inspiring his readers through his elegant writing and welcoming voice. I will read this book again from the beginning and actually started doing so last night. I wish I had read it as a book held in my hands rather than on a Kindle. I will read it again not only for the story; I will also go back to find the words and wisdom of both subject and author which often moved me as I read them. With the Kindle, stopping to highlight would have interrupted my reading, but going back to find them is impossible. And the narrative is simply too compelling to be hindered. Holding a book, when I finished I would have had a tactile memory of where each line was from the weight of the pages read and yet to be read. I would also have the mental image of its place on a page. So, I will read Johnny Pail Face again and savor it. And that's more than fine. It merits a second reading.

This is one of the best, most engrossing books I have had the pleasure of reading. Beautifully written, it tells the story of Johnny Pail Face's life and leaves your spirit with a sense of satisfaction.Johnny lead an intersting life full of hate, shame, violence, love, laughter, and learning. He shared the good, the bad, the ugly, and the inspiring. It almost felt like fiction but it isn't. It would make a great movie!John Jarvis weaves the old man's story into a narrative of history so the reader has a good vantage point to understand the context of the times and Johnny's metamorphosis.In the end it was a life well-lived, a life well honored, and a story of a human being, foibles and all, that will stay with you forever.

Not only a remarkable biography, but an incredible lesson in history, psychology, spirituality and humanity. By the end of the book, you feel the peace that took Johnny decades to attain.

Loved his story. Heart breaking at times. Full of inspiration and hope.

I'm just starting to finally jump into this story after receiving it from John hself from his Native American class at Bay Path&already am enjoying it very much. I loved listening to his stories in class&felt I was on a journey with him as he spoke. Reading this book, I feel on that journey with Pail Face...meeting them both was an inspiration&I highly recommend this book to people to read. Its sad that a lot has been lost but there is so much to gain as well....thanks John for the opportunity to have learned & been on the walk of your journey in class...I'd do it again&again because there is so much to learn. Thanks again for the opportunity to write this and also to get to know you John as not only a writer but a great story teller as well! P.S. You had once told me when signing my book, to write a story..much like this one...I am slowly writing one ..it may take me a few years.

The work John Jarvis put into meticulously collecting and coherently setting forth the large and small scenes of Johnny's life is astounding. I have some idea of what it's like to work on a longtime project, but still can't image all the work the author did, and all the time he spent with this astounding subject. We don't know what someone's been through until we ask and sit down and ask. We are all the better for following Johnny through his life, all thanks to the years and years John spent in his company. Via a path of challenge, tragedy and triumph that takes him from reservation to battlefield to addiction to the love of family and God, Johnny Pail Face became a human being. And via his devotion and care in chronicling this bigger-than-life life, John Jarvis has become an author to emulate.
