The Perfect, Budget-Friendly Upgrade for Older Devices
I bought the Kingston A400 SSD specifically to upgrade the aging HDD in an old PS3, aiming for faster loading times and overall responsiveness. While the A400 might not be cutting-edge by today's blazing NVMe standards, it proves to be an absolutely excellent and incredibly cheap upgrade for older tech that still relies on 2.5-inch hard drives. The difference in an older system, like a PS3, is immediately noticeable. Game loading times are significantly reduced, and general system navigation feels much snappier compared to a traditional spinning hard drive. It truly breathes new life into devices that were once bottlenecked by slow storage. Beyond consoles, this SSD would also make for fast, cheap, and reliable storage for regular files if you need to replace a failing HDD in an older laptop or desktop, or even as a dedicated drive for less demanding applications. I've had no problems with reliability so far, and the speeds are exactly as expected for a SATA III SSD of this generation. Overall: If you're looking to provide a meaningful speed boost to an older laptop, desktop, or even a classic console like the PS3 that utilizes 2.5-inch drives, the Kingston A400 SSD is a superb choice. It offers fantastic value for money, reliable performance, and significantly improves the user experience without breaking the bank. Highly recommended for revitalizing older hardware.

GOOD QUALITY + CHEAP = WELL NEEDED UPGRADES TO PC’S & CONSOLES!!!
This is honestly a must buy in my opinion. For the price and it is coming from one on the most respected storage manufactures this is a steal. I have bought 4 of these SSD drives and they are amazing. Not only is my desktop booting up in under 10 seconds, but I have one for my PS4 and its loading gaming like PUBG and Red Dead Redemption so much faster. I keep one in my travel bag and have been in about 3 airports now and there has been no issue with the SSD. Packaging: The SSD is packaged well and is very light weight. The stick is house in a really cool stealth looking case, with the Kingston logo edged into the front of the case. Performance: When they say its 10x faster I don’t think this is a sales gimmick, It genuinely feels like this is more than 10x faster than the original SATA drive I have in my desktop, but further more I actually have everything render in straight away on PUBG on PS4 while my team mates are all still moaning about playdoh building and weapons not loading in. Since I use my PS4 mostly to play games on, this has made all my games stored on the SSD load much much faster and that is a massive deal for any gamer. Pros: * Good Quality * Cheap * Fast * Light * Multipurpose use for Laptops, Desktops, and Consoles Cons: I personally haven’t had any issues with the SSD’s I have bought. Conclusion: If you are looking for a much-needed good quality SSD to replace an old SATA drive this is a must buy. The price for these drives also just keeps dropping so it’s a no brainer really. You can use it as a caddy drive or upgrade the drive in your laptops, desktops or consoles. Just remember that if you are not using it as a caddy and you are upgrading your drives then you will need to do a back up and restore or installed the operating system again from scratch. I am just glad that this technology has moved really quickly in the area and I have seen other manufactures slicing their prices on their SSD’s too, so we as the consumers are actually winning for a change. Thank you Kingston I will be getting another one of these soon for my Xbox.

Great price for performance and capacity - when on sale
This is a great ssd, and honestly my only regret is not buying a second. This is a great value ssd for its price, capacity and speed. Yes the speed may not be the fastest like others but for its speed its a lot. For gaming the speed is more than adequate for daily use and gaming. As this is my main drive for games I have a decent bit to say. The write speeds to begin with are amazing as with a a good internet speed of 250 I am having a stable 1 GB written to the disk in 20s. This makes installing games fast. In game the performance is also great with open world games loading with ease and games like cyberpunk in seconds with low wait times. For price, this is defiantly one of them products you wait to get best bang for buck. In my case I got 480 GB for 19.99 which is a great deal. Use in PS4 is adequate, but most importantly a significant one and I could easily recommend this as games have benefit crazy amounts with open world games and environments seeing the most improvements. But coming from hdd this is expected. A sizable improvement while still staying light on the wallet. So overall great, cheap product that is excellent for old pc and console but need to wait a bit before buying.

Used in a Set Top Box it's brilliant. In an enclosure for TV too
"Kingston A400 SSD Internal Solid State Drive 2.5" SATA Rev 3.0, 960GB - SA400S37/960G" -16% £44.49 from amazon August 2024. NEWER one. Using a UGreen HDD enclosure as main system drive for my TV. I had to do a factory reset of the TV to get it to work, but it is functioning as the main drive. Fast, including formatting and moving apps from internal storage. OLDER - 480GB "Kingston A400 SSD Internal Solid State Drive 2.5" SATA Rev 3.0, 480GB - SA400S37/480G" -67% £20.97 from amazon April 2023. Short version - used in a Zgemma H9 Twin SE - no other drives. I DID buy a MicroSD card as well, but the two did not like each other, so just this drive as the STB has a LOT of internal memory for software. I wanted plug and play and got it. I am contemplating Linux for my PC, so am looking for internal / external drives, not certain if i'll pick this one, it's a little too basic and I HATE slow loads. Recommended - unlikely you'll get better for the price. I am going to buy a spare as a precaution.

PC using a hard disk with Windows? This SSD will transform it! Includes Acronis cloning software.
I have a 5-year-old Dell laptop with a conventional hard disk, 4GB RAM and a Pentium 4415 CPU with a CPU Mark of 2244. It's quite slow running Windows 10 - particularly launching apps. So I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 12GB and launching was around 80% faster i.e. apps that took 60 seconds now took around 40 seconds; better, not bad for £15. Swapping between launched apps was faster too, but there was still a long sluggish period after launching Windows during which disk activity (reported by Task Manager) was around 100%; setting up the swap file? (I bought the RAM upgrade from Crucial Memory UK, running its compatibility tester on my laptop to be sure I bought the right thing. I'm allowed to mention Crucial because they sent me to Amazon to buy their RAM when I decided to purchase. An excellent system, win-win. I'll add a review for the RAM too.) Anyway, time to upgrade the disk. Shopping around for an SSD, the Kingston A400 was a lot cheaper than my usual source of SSDs, and I've often bought memory from them - so worth a try. It's a bare drive, no screws or brackets - although you do get a year's free use of the Acronis disk tools. Anyway, installing the SSD in the laptop should be straightforward, but I wanted to SWAP the hard disk out, so needed to clone it to the A400 first, which was trickier. First I needed to download the Kingston disk management tools to get access to the Acronis software on the laptop, then I needed to connect the A400 to a second SATA port on the laptop - which does not have a second SATA port of course. Been here before! I have a USB-to-SATA adaptor for just such situations, used that. HINT: There are other ways to clone the disk, such as using the Acronis software to create an image file, so you don't HAVE to buy a USB to SATA adaptor, but those other methods are a bit more complex. Getting the Acronis disk cloning tool to work took patience, it took multiple attempts. I *think* my laptop was downloading a Windows update in the middle of this, not sure. (HINT: Remember to disconnect from the internet or suspend Windows Updates first.) Anyway, it did work on my fifth attempt, taking around 30 minutes. Phew. With the laptop disk cloned, I could open up the laptop and swap the A400 for the hard disk. Upgrades complete, the old laptop is transformed. Window start-up and app launching is now TWO to FOUR times faster and switching between launched apps is almost instantaneous. And there's no sluggish period when Windows starts up, the SSD is fast enough to power through the swap file setup; it's only 5-10% busy rather than 100%. I am very happy. Before the upgrades, my old laptop was painfully slow to use (and, in truth, it always was). With extra memory and the Kingston SSD it's entirely usable once again. And oh so portable. It's hard for me to be certain how effective the SSD upgrade would have been on its own, but I estimate that even without the RAM upgraded (from 4GB to 12GB) it would have made the laptop much more usable, as Windows hammers that disk - not just for storage but also for virtual memory (swap file)

Revitalizing Reliability
After almost a year of relentless use, this SSD, the 480GB variant (SA400S37/480G), has proven itself to be a reliable and transformative addition to my computing setup. The noticeable improvement in performance was immediate when I upgraded a few years old laptop from a traditional HDD to the Kingston A400 SSD. The laptop, once sluggish and unresponsive, underwent a remarkable transformation. The speed and responsiveness brought about by this SSD have revitalized the overall computing experience, making everyday tasks more efficient and enjoyable. Even after almost a year of intensive use, the SSD continues to operate with the same vigor as when it was first installed, a testament to its durability and longevity. The 480GB storage capacity strikes a well-balanced chord, providing ample space for my data without compromising speed. This, combined with the SATA Rev 3.0 technology, makes the Kingston A400 SSD an ideal choice for those seeking a performance boost without sacrificing storage capacity. Moreover, the Kingston A400 SSD boasts impressive read speeds ranging between 500~550 MB/s and write speeds between 480~520 MB/s when connected to a SATA III interface or a USB 3 interface with an adaptor this time (SATA III, operates at a maximum speed of 6 Gb/s; first generation of USB 3 supports data transfer speeds of up to 5 Gb/s). This Kingston A400 SSD has exceeded my expectations in terms of both performance and durability. Its transformative impact on an older laptop and its continued reliability almost a year later make it a standout choice for anyone looking to enhance their computing experience.

Really really good value for most people
This SSD is excellent value and is a way to boost performance (depending upon your requirements) on a laptop currently with traditional hard drive. As previous reviewers have pointed out, its write is slower than read so if you are going to be transferring large amounts of data to it on a regular basis you might want to look elsewhere (including the whereabouts and contents of your wallet!). I used it to upgrade a Dell latitude Intel i5 laptop which I use primarily for giving presentations: consequently I need fast start-up and access to my files. Write speed is relatively unimportant to me and it may well be for the general user also: just remember that one of the most irritating thing about computers is the time it takes to access programs and data – this SSD will solve the problem for you. For general use writing to disk most people won't be aware of the slightly slower speed because when you save a file or even transfer data you normally just let the computer to get on with it and do something else. Computer experts will be aware of what they need anyway but I would suggest for the average non-geek user this SSD will be entirely adequate. E.g. my laptop now boots up in 15 seconds and there is no longer an annoying wait while it ploughs through the start-up sequence. Installation is easy (just search for this video on YouTube (Dell Latitude E6410 Upgrade SSD Drive Memory). This particular Kingston package does not come with a spacer (SSD's are thinner than traditional hard drives) but these are easily obtainable and you will probably find that you don't need it anyway due to the fixings in the laptop. You will need some specialist software to transfer your old operating system (e.g. Windows) and data. I use Paragon hard disk manager which is cheap, effective and reasonably straightforward as this sort of software goes. But there are also lots of alternatives, some are free Open Source. If you are not computer geek-competent then I recommend you get expert help. If you have original installation discs you could course just reinstall the operating system and then copy your data across – for non-experts that might be an easier solution. I'm very pleased with this item and therefore recommended it. Always keep in mind when buying computer hardware that most of it will be reclassified as "obsolete & unfashionable junk" in just a few short years, so unless you have specialist requirements and know your way around them, it's probably more sensible to spend the minimum amount needed to achieve an improvement. Once you reach a certain level, any improvement comes at a disproportionate cost for most people. Basically you can't go wrong for 25 quid!
