Manuel: Portrait of a Serial Killer

Scottish Monster
Manuel case brilliantly explained, as are the differences between Scots and English law and procedure. Did you know a Scottish jury is 15 and you can be sent down on an 8 to 7 majority? The legalese is different too. A much fuller setting out of the actual case too. A monster who deserved the rope. Apparently it took 8 seconds between the wardens walking into the condemned cell, cuffing Manuel and the trap door being sprung in the execution cell. That's the way to do it.

Fascinating Insight
Fascinating story and insight into social conditions and attitudes in the nineteen fifties. I grew up in Manuels stamping ground and although I was a toddler at the time of the murders the book made me shiver a few times as I recognised some of the locations. My dear old Mum always maintained that Manuel came to our back door and tried to sell her some lucky heather! I was playing in the living room at the time! The book is well written with some interesting observations. Would have liked a chapter on what became of the various individuals involved in the case hence the four stars.

Coming from Glasgow area, although only a kid at the time of his rampage, I remember him well. So, this book obviously of interest. Can't describe a book about the crimes of a mass murderer as enjoyable, it's not. But it's factual and read able.
