It is lightwieght since it is not a full suit jacket and seems that it would protect the underarm of the fencing arm. Or at least I ordered by the chart for my size and it does not fil all the way around to under the opposite side expsoing a gap under the other arm.I Just got an interest in learning this sport, just in time to watch fencing on the summer olympics. When taking up a sport, I like to have my own equipment so I don't have to keep using someone elses or rent. So this is a newbie to the sport review of equipment I am acquirng to use in my first lessons. Seems to be a CE level 1 rating at 350N

good fit for the size we ordered and it is required by tournament to have this underneath your fencing jacket and guards. this is a must have for any US or international tournament.
