Another vivid, thrilling novel from Daly
Dark, gruesome, thrilling - Cutting Edge is all of these and more. This is Bill Daly's third crime thriller in the DCI Charlie Anderson series, and I think he gets better with each new book. The novel switched scenes and character quite rapidly at the beginning, and I found it a bit of a challenge to get to know each one. However, with Bill Daly, you know that everything is going to be important, so you have to pay attention. It's all royally repaid as the story rolls out, because without this complexity the surprise of the twists and turns would definitely be diminished. There are twists and turns a-plenty – and for all my concentration, I didn't see the big one coming. It's a great read – and the evocation of not just Glasgow but locations such as Mull as well adds considerably to the strong sense of place that makes the book come alive.I do hope there will be a fourth before Charlie retires. Or perhaps he might be persuaded to delay his departure from the force for another few years? After all, there could be grandchildren to think about ...

Read in 3 sittings!
Really enjoyable book, I started reading it the same day I got it, I read it over a couple of days and was so sorry when it was finished! It's the sort of book you can't stop reading but don't want to finish!! Over the past 2 books I feel as if I have got to know Charlie Anderson, his workmates and family. I was really interested in the crime part of the book but just as thrilled by the back story. The book is very well rounded with lots of clues and 'red herrings' that kept me guessing. I admire the attention to detail on police procedures and also on the description of Glasgow and environs, the language and the pubs. Although this is book three in the Charlie Anderson series it works well as a stand alone novel - for me though I want more back story too! I do hope there will be more books and even if Charlie does retire, I'm sure he will still be interested in crime and may even be used as a consultant by some. Do yourself a favour and read this book (and the other two) more please.

Glaswegian Policeman Charlie Anderson is back - Highly Recommended
I enjoyed Daly's first two Charlie Anderson books (Double Mortice and Black Mail) and this one was just as good, or maybe even better. The plot gallops along with the right mix of real clues and red herrings. The characters, good and bad, are believable, and the setting, Glaswegian and Scottish, is interesting but not obtrusive (a little Scottish vernacular can go a long way).I look forward to more in the Anderson series, but I am worried that Anderson is approaching retirement age, and what will Daly do then? Go back to a younger (origins) Anderson? Bring him out of retirement to handle cold cases? Or pass the baton to his young side-kick? Whatever route is chosen, I will be reading the next one.One final thought : it is a shame that Daly didn't start writing about Charlies Anderson 15 or 20 years earlier; Sean Connery would have been perfect as Anderson.
