Absolutely fascinating!
I used to read his work when he started writing about Deep Purple in the 1970’s and was delighted to discover that he had published this book. I am now looking forward to his next book.

Re-sets the bar for Deep Purple books!
Anyone who has bought a Deep Purple remaster or archival release is familiar with Simon Robinson's work. His liner notes are among the best in the business and a joy to read. Well, this is like all those CD booklets only in bigger print (thank god!) The story is fascinating, the pictures are fantastic and the story is legendary. One can only hope he continues this as a series, covering all their albums (at least the MkII line-up). This isn't just a story about the album, Simon tells the story of the band, the musicians, the era, the concerts, the mayhem that surrounded the band as they rose to the top and more. Simon breaks down the album, song by song, studio by studio. There's an incredible amount of detailed information, including the specific equipment played by each band member, inspiration for each the songs, how they were developed, etc. You find out how many takes were done, which one's were chosen for inclusion, what songs were played live and which one's weren't. There's info on the BBC sessions and more. Grab this if you're a fan, you won't be disappointed. They don't come any better than this.

waiting for the wait for the richochet was worthwhile
The book gives a lot of nice facts and details, e.g. the history of each song that did make it or did not make it to the "In Rock" . Some details are less interesting for me, e.g. which equipment had been used by each musician. The photographs are nice, but some pictures I knew already from the internet. So it is not all new to me. The listing of in rock concerts and studio sessions gives a good overview how each song did develop in time. The book also contains many quotes from interviews with each musician.

Purple's Purple Patch
This book is very much for the avid fan as some of the detail is very specific to events and times that hopefully you will already know about. It is however written in a way that you will be able to pick it up a really get a good knowledge of Purple's early years. It is written well and Simon Robinson has again done a good job in bringing together detail about events and really brings to life a time in music history where rock developed. There are plenty of good quality pictures and above all it really details it's subject matter ( The In Rock album) really well and with interesting detail.
