Precise and easy to use
My only surprise was when it stuck to my stove top: I forgot it has a magnet imbedded so you can keep it handy on a metal appliance!

Temp readings wild variations
This thermometer is almost useless. It is nearly impossible to get a good reading. Moving the unit probe, as well as the external probe, just a fraction of an inch causes 20+ degrees of change. Last night I made 1 3/4 inch filet mignon by searing on both sides and finishing it in 500 degree oven. I used the external probe trying to reach a temperature of 125-128 degrees. I removed the steak from the fridge and let it sit for a half hour or so. I inserted the probe a little at a time trying to find the coolest temp. As I did this the readings varied from 62 degrees to 46 degrees. I left the probe at the 46 degrees spot. When the steak reached 126 degrees, I took it out to rest. As I slowly removed the probe, the temp reading went as high as 158 degrees. After resting for about 5 minutes I cut into the steak. It was well past the medium rare I was looking for. An old analog thermometer had a 142 degree reading.I was really hoping to replace the analog with an instant read digital thermometer. It certainly is not this one. Can't afford to ruin expensive cut of meat like filet mignon.
