first-hand account of gorilla observations
Great book about a man who camped out in the african wilderness for many months to observe gorillas. This book gives detailed accounts of his sightings and observations. It delves into the foods they eat, their nest-building habits, behavior, and more. It's a little slow at the beginning, but it gets more into gorillas as you continue reading.

Best Book on Gorillas
After reading Schaller's book I can't recommend it highly enough to others, either interested in natural science, gorillas, or just want a great read.

Better than expected!
The book was awesome. Very descriptive, explained the landscape, the behavior of gorillas, but also the people involved. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

I especially enjoyed the very first chapter which provided a comprehensive overview ...
Mr Schaller was a pioneer in the study of the mountain gorillas and this work recounts his studies undertaken in what was later known as Zaire in the early 1960 just prior to independence (and subsequent spiral into civil war and violence which has yet to see an end). His insights into gorilla behavior and his adventures into areas wholly unknown to West at the time are very entertaining. I especially enjoyed the very first chapter which provided a comprehensive overview of the history of the discovery of the gorilla by Westerners.

Wonderful Gorilla study and more
This is a wonderful combination of anthropology, history, ecology, and gorilla studies. Schaller writes in a captivating and inviting style. I loved that he presented his datea on gorillas, the focus of his presence in Africa, within his own experience there. Imbeded within was ecological commentary expectable with endandered creatures; however, Schaller managed to make this contribute favorably to his book rather than the whining diatribe it could have been.Highly recommendable for both social reading as well as a suppliment to an anthropology class.

ANOTHER MASTERPIECE OF GENIUS AND PLEASURE
"Dr. George" is simply one of the great naturalists of our time, and writes in such a delightful and interesting manner, that even though his topics are not always my favored subject matter, he causes me to love what was not a passion. The profound gifts of this brilliant scientist includes always being clear and making you feel present, and has made him a top world expert on any topic he handles. He is simply a treasure who is able to make his explorations profoundly satisfying.

excellent a really good read
A look back into the past, before luxurious colour pictures, this account of Gorillas in the mists of Rwanda for the general public is very well written and extremely informative. The author is a much respected biologist. A really good read.
