Franz Schubert: The Complete Songs

Graham Johnson is one of the best accompanists in vocal chamber literature and a scholar in his own right. He really knows about what he writes, offering to us a first rate knowledge in the subject. A life achievement.If you are a serious music player or teacher, you should have this work.

Aunque lo esencial de los textos aquí presentes se encuentran en las copiosas notas que acompañaban a los discos sueltos de la edición Hyperion de los lieder de Schubert, estos tres recios volúmenes suponen una de las grandes producciones editoriales consagradas a la música. Abundan las ilustraciones y la tipografía es elegante y práctica. Los textos, eso sí, aparecen sólo en el original alemán y en inglés, así que quienes sólo manejen la lengua de Cervantes tienen otro motivo para clamar. Su precio no es, precisamente, lo más atractivo, pero no es más que lo que vale una entrada para una Traviata del montón. Una obra para toda la vida (con la música correspondiente, claro).

This is an extraordinary set of books on the songs of Franz Schubert. While I have not read all of it (!), I have had a month to read the general sections at the beginning of the first volume and end of the third volume, and browse the entries on some of my favorite songs.The first point is that, while the commentary for the 37 Hyperion discs on which Graham Johnson and many fine singers recorded the complete songs was a starting point for these volumes, they go far beyond what is found in the booklets with the discs. Much information has been added about the poets and the contexts for the songs. Much new information is included.Second, the set is organized in a way that makes it easy to find information. ALL of the entries are in alphabetical order (leaving out an initial Der, Die, Das, ... ), with the exception that the song cycles are treated as a single group (e.g., Winterreise is one entry under "W", not 24 entries scattered around). Second, the information provided for each song includes a set of standardized facts about it, as well as links to the previous and following entries in the chronological list of Schubert's songs. This includes the Opus, D and H numbers, key structure, first line of the music, complete texts in German and English, and listings of edition(s), commentaries, and recordings in the Hyperion set and by Fischer-Dieskau with timings.There are entries for each of the poets, for example 15 pages for Goethe, 2 pages for von Bruchmann. These are in the overall alphabetical set-up of the volumes.Third, the writing is consistently clear and engaging (as those who know Mr Johnson's original writing for the discs as issued will recognize). It is a pleasure to look up a song (or just pick one at random) and read what he has to say about it.Finally, this set is an excellent value. It has nearly 3000 pages, and the text fills the pages (margins are less than an inch).Anyone with an interest in Schubert and his songs will find this highly worth having as a companion.

un' enciclopedia meravigliosa e dettagliata che copre tutte le lieder di Schubert. utilissima per cantanti ma anche ascoltatori, scritta bene e piena di illustrazione.

Graham Johnson ist nicht nur ein großer Liedpianist, er ist auch einer der versiertesten Schubert-Kenner unserer Zeit. Er hat selber alle Schubert-Stätten besichtigt, er sammelt Erstausgaben, Zeitschriften und Büchern der Schubert-Zeit, hält sich kontinuierlich auf dem laufenden, was die Schubertforschung betrifft (forscht auch selber und hat z.B. Textautoren identifiziert) etc etc ...Das heißt, die Informationen, die er gibt, sind alle eigens geprüft und nicht wie so oft Wiederaufwärmen von gängigen Klischees.Und Informationen gibt es zuhauf!!Jedes Lied wird - neben Incipit, Text und englischer Übersetzung - einzeln beschrieben (und zwar auch jedes Fragment). Die klavierbegleiteten mehrstimmigen Lieder sind auch dabei, einige unbegleitete auch. Alles, was in der Hyperion Schubert Edition (HSE) aufgenommen wurde, und noch etwas mehr.Wer seine Begleitbücher zu den Einzelveröffentlichungen der HSE kennt, wird eine Ahnung davon haben, was in diesen drei dicken Büchern steht, aber Graham Johnson hat sie nicht 1:1 übernommen, sondern überprüft und teilweise ergänzt oder revidiert.Es wird hier nicht, wie im Schubert-Liedlexikon, systematisch "zum Text" und "zur Musik" unterschieden. Das Lied als ganze wird kommentiert. Die Kommentare sind präzis, détailliert aber nicht ausschweifend. Sind sind auch oft subjektiv, aber dies ist die Subjektivität eines Künstlers, der jedes einzelne Lied gespielt hat und spielt (außer den unbegleiteteten Gesängen versteht sich, aber die hat er auch oft gehört) und eines profunden Schubert-Kenners. Es geht weit über eine bloße Beschreibung des Liedes hinaus, es ist auch keine trockene Analyse, sondern ein höchst aufschlußreiches Kommentar. Dazu gibt es eine Menge fachlicher Informationen (Erstveröffentlichung, erste öffentliche Aufführung, Textquelle - G. Johnson hat die Veröffentlichungen der Gedichte aufgespürt, die Schubert zugänglich waren -, weitere Veröffentlichungen und Bearbeitungen, Lied-Dauer im Fischer-Dieskau-Kompendium, in der HSE, bei Pears/Britten ...), Gedanken zur Interpretation ...Und nicht nur das. Es gibt einen Eintrag für jeden einzelnen Dichter. Es gibt auch allgemeinere Einträge über den Gebrauch des Pedals, über Sänger und Pianisten in der Geschichte, über die Liedkomponisten der Schubert-Zeit ...Graham Johnsons Stil macht das Lesen angenehm, was durch das Layout und die Illustrationen noch verstärkt wird.Man kann selbstverständlich sich ein bestimmtes Lied aussuchen und den entsprechenden Artikel lesen. Die Lieder sind alphabetisch nach Titel geordnet, ohne den bestimmten Artikel miteinzubeziehen, Alternativtitel sind auch mit einem Verweis auf den tatsächlichen Titel aufgelistet.Man kann auch ein Buch aus dem Schuber nehmen und frei eintauchen ...Tatsächlich das aktuelle Referenz-Werk, was Schuberts Lieder betrifft und man kann vermuten, daß es diesen Status noch lange behalten wird.
