Most have book for mushroom hunters
Despite having the internet at my finger tips. I still found boletes mysterious. This book taught me a lot and it is an indispensable book in my collection. I first took it out from the library and after my first read through. I knew that I had to have it on hand. If all mushroom keys could be written as elegantly as the ones found in this book. It's clear a lot of time and effort went into making this book. It's pages are jammed packed with information hard to find else where.

Book is great. Like others, I mine arrived with a cover damaged in shipping
First, the book: it's great, a solid learning resource. Then, the delivery: this seems to be a common issue with this book from when shipped via Amazon. I'd suggest that if you can find a different way to get the book, go ahead and do that. Others seem to be having the same problem. It's a large soft-cover and gets dented, smashed, or bent easily if it's placed in an envelope for delivery (which it is).

Another quality book by Bessette, although organization of images is different.
The mycology books by Bessette are my go-to books for identification. They are well organized with fantastic photos and help me by limiting the geographic area to my neck of the woods. My only minor complaint is that compared to their North American Bolete book, these have the photos mixed in with the descriptions. This is very useful when reading descriptions, but at the same time, I found that in their other books where all the images are next to each other, I usually leaf through the images to help narrow down the types of mushrooms I may have found, then go to the description section to confirm. It's not as easy to do a quick visual identification to narrow down my choices when the images are spread throughout the book. That said, the book continues to have very good descriptions and images and I highly recommend it.

Definitive text for Boletes
A beautiful and well-written reference book for bolete hunters and lovers, this was a much appreciated gift for my daughter. She plans to keep it long term as her main source for bolete identification.

Good book for beginners
The book is pretty good for beginners. It is very well organized, although I have not yet successfully been able to positively identify any boletes with it. Not for lack of trying though. I am pretty well read and have a good reading vocabulary but frequently have to go to my dictionary to help me understand the terminology used in this book, I would like it to be a little clearer. Other than that it is, like I said, a good book for beginners.

Blown away by how wonderfully this book is put together
Blown away by how wonderfully this book is put together. The depth of content, generous amount of not only colored pictures but high quality images that allow the reader in most cases to see detailed features of the stalk, pore surface, cap, and stain coloration make this book a real gem. Can't find anything to complain about (and i am a skilled complainer), I even like the font, navigability, line spacing and most importantly rich information on each mushroom including clarification on taxonomy changes.Even opening the book for the first time, feeling the weight and seeing the sharp cover is an experience.

The best guide to North American boletes.
Bar none the best guide for identification of North American boletes. Bolete taxonomy is confusing and this does a splendid job of clearly and comprehensively walking through all the recent changes to names, and identifying features. If you are interested in accurately identifying boletes this is a must buy. The pictures are fantastic and where possible cover the gamut of ages, stages and varying morphology.

Well worth the price.
Once again Alan and Arleen Bessette have produced another superb handbook for the identification of Boletes. As with many other large groups of fungi, this 469 page book describes mushrooms that have tubular pores on the underside of the cap, not gills like those found in most other species. There are excellent full color photographs for each species discussed along with a detailed morphological description. Also included are general habitat preferences and distribution notes. A must get reference guide for anybody seriously interested in mycology.

A must for serious mushroom hunter
Pretty much the ultimate guide to boletes of Eastern Canada, almost 500 pages thick.Useful for identifying boletes when other guides fail.I also highly recommend the Timothy J Baroni Mushrooms guide (Timber Press), 600 pages. Both are superb books.
