Evans and Penzer detail the life of a man who was far more than "just a ring announcer."
Following "Nitro" and "Grateful", Guy Evans returns with another great collaboration with a WCW personality. David Penzer tells his life story through 2001 here, with a heavy focus on his time spent in World Championship Wrestling behind the scenes and in front of the camera.Penzer's story of how he came to be a part of the wrestling business is a fascinating one, detailing how he earned the respect of wrestlers and decision-makers over time while never making quite as much coin as people might imagine a weekly television personality on wrestling's hottest show in 1998 would pull in. Penzer is the only man to be part of every broadcast of Nitro and Thunder, and his work ethic earned him more responsibility over time. The other aspect of this book that resonated with this reader is Penzer's honesty about his lifelong battle with anxiety and how it's crippled him at times. It's an issue many deal with, and reading of a successful man such as Penzer still dealing with the troubles it brings may be a help to some. The end of the book also features several bonus pages of various formats and documents from WCW television shows during Penzer's tenure. Fascinating stuff to see.Overall I'm very happy with my purchase of this book and look forward to reading Volume 2, due out in October 2024. Well done to both Mr. Evans and Mr. Penzer from this old WCW fan.

Brings back some great memories…and taught me new ones
I had the privilege of working with David in WCW from 1997 to 2001. I was very excited when I heard that he was writing a book and to top it off have Guy Evans assist! David was always a great ring announcer who also had the task of entertaining the crowd during the commercial breaks. Very few can do it as good. It was great to hear of how David got his start in the wrestling business and his devotion and love for the business paid off, for him and the fans. He did a great job in crafting his book in an informative and entertaining way. He brought back memories that I had forgotten about and gave me an insight into who David Penzer the man is. I once I purchased the book it took no time to read it because I had a hard time putting it down. I am looking forward to Volume 2 sooner than later. Get you copy today!!!Charles Robinson

Fantastic Career Retrospective of the WCW Ring Announcer During the "Monday Night Wars"
David Penzer was the Ring Announcer for WCW during the late '90s pro-wrestling boom period known as the "Monday Night Wars". In that role, he had a front row seat to every major WCW moment, as he did not miss a single episode of either NITRO or THUNDER. So this book is packed full of great stories regarding some of the biggest moments in pro-wrestling history. And not just the on-screen moments! David's role meant that he was also backstage and got a very clear look at what made the company successful, as well as what lead to its downfall. And unlike most wrestling books, David makes no effort to "put himself over" or settle any scores. He's just here to share some stories of what he saw, and to explain how it all happened. Also worth noting is that David has (wisely) followed the lead of his old boss (Eric Bischoff) and partnered up with author Guy Evans to put this book together. Guy previously established himself as a premiere pro-wrestling writer with his 2018 book NITRO, so (thanks to Guy) David's stories here are fully contextualized, fact-checked, and presented in a very accessible way. This book is a must-read for any fans of classic wrestling.

One of the best wrestling books of all time
While it’s the perfect companion to Evans landmark book “Nitro”, Sitting Ringside Volume 1 stands on its own as the most intimate memoir of WCW. There are countless stories you’ve never heard anywhere, made remarkably accessible and personable by Penzer’s candid, at times brutally honest perspective. A MUST HAVE for any WCW fan, and essential reading for wrestling fans in general.
