Sundials: Design, Construction, and Use (Springer Praxis Books)

Before buying the book I googled many webpages trying to understand how a sundial works. To no avail.Then I found this book…and I was able to build my own working models!

This book clearly shows the how's and why's of various types of sundials and the methods of interpreting dialing and is presented with clear descriptions and nicely done illustrations. It is written for someone with a somewhat technical background and a fundamental understanding of trigonometry ,although, much can be understood and learned about all aspects of dialing,it's construction and operation without the math background. The astronomy chapter in the begining can seem somewhat irrellavent at first but shows it's worth in the later chapters when discussing the different types of dials and their relations to the changes of the orbit of our earth about the sun. The illustrations take the mystery out of trying to visualize in your mind's eye the various positions described for the earth's orbit about the sun and it's subsequent variations in always casting changing shadows upon our planet.The methods for practical construction of a sundial and the calculations involved are easily followed with many astronomical concepts learned along the way.

Using clear visual diagrams to explain basic trigonometry, this book will empower the reader on any latitude. He gives a brief but Romantic historical assessment of sundials and their inextricable link with human wonder. To begin to understand the technical workings of these clean geometric timepieces from our nearest star, connects us to both the seasons and beauty in profound way. Mine will be made of granite and stainless steel.

I MAKE n TEACH SUNdial making. This book is an excellent guide and reference.I made the attached piano SUNdial for an amiga of mine in Switzerland who is a world famous Boogie Woogie pianist..

Having to wait over a month for the arrival of a book can not be considered normal.The shipment has been very poor.The book presents a content standard, far from expectations.It is only an introductory book to build sundials.

I found the complete information to make a sundial, easy language, drawings and explanation, excelent book for begginers and internediates on sundials. A basic book to have it.

The book has nice clear illustrations. It is not nearly as complete asSundials: Their Construction and Useby R. Newton Mayall and Margaret W. Mayall. Their illustrations are not 'modern media' but definitely clear enough. It has lots more information for the buck than D. Savoie's Sundials.Savoie's book is easy to read and covers many basic types of dials. The tables for French locations are not helpful and would better be replaced with formulas.
