Great ereader, it goes everywhere with me!
I absolutely love this eReader and take it with me everywhere. The Kobo Clara BW is lightweight, comfortable to hold, and very easy to use, which makes it great for travel and everyday reading. The screen is smooth, durable, and truly glare-free. I can read for long stretches without eye strain, even in bright light. It has replaced doom-scrolling on my phone before bed, which has made my sleep better. One of my favorite things about this device is how customizable it is. Beyond the standard settings, there’s a hidden menu that lets you fine-tune the reading experience even more, which I really appreciate. The dark mode (inverse reading) is excellent and something I use all the time, especially at night. I have two minor complaints: 1) when switching between menus in dark mode, the screen briefly flashes as it refreshes. 2) response time when clicking is not lightning speed, just normal speed. This sometimes makes me click things twice accidentally. Both are noticeable, but not dealbreakers, and they're the only issues I’ve had after 6+ months of near daily use. I love that I can load PDFs and EPUBs directly from my computer without needing a subscription. For me, that freedom alone sets it apart from other eReaders. It seems like a well-built device that does exactly what I want it to do. If you’re looking for a simple, flexible, and enjoyable reading experience, this one is hard to beat.

A Kindle-Killer: The Kobo Clara BW
The Kobo Clara Black and White is an excellent e-reader with a crystal-clear screen. You will not be disappointed with its two-week battery life, even if that may seem less impressive compared to Amazon Kindles. Its wonderful features and seamless integration with computer software like Calibre more than make up for it. With Calibre, you can easily and freely send books from Project Gutenberg, and you can rest assured that you actually own the E-Ink library you are building. Just like physical books, you know that the files on your hard drive—whether from publishers, Project Gutenberg, or other free resources—are truly yours. Amazon Kindle, on the other hand, robs you of ownership. They have, in fact, recently revoked people of access to books they believed they owned. If a book is on Kindle, you no longer truly own it. That’s why I give my utmost endorsement to those considering a switch to Kobo. But don’t switch just because you dislike Kindle—if your Kindle works for you, use it until its battery gives out. However, if you’re looking for a new platform, I urge you to choose Kobo. If you’ve never tried E-Ink before, buy the Kobo. Try it—you won’t be disappointed, and you won’t want to go back. This device truly shines when paired with the Calibre library system. Calibre is a free program you can download on macOS or Windows, and it completely changes your ability to manage a vast E-Ink library and transfer books to and from your Kobo with ease. The Kobo Clara Black and White is compact enough to fit in your pocket. You can change the font and typeface with ease, and you can easily switch the background to black and white to make nighttime reading easier on your eyes. All in all, I highly recommend the Kobo Clara Black and White and give it my full endorsement.

Love this thing!
My first gen Nook was finally due for an upgrade. Looked at Kindle and decided to go the Kobo route for a few reasons: 1. EPUB support. Most of my library is that format so that was a must-have. I also wanted the freedom to be away from Amazon ecosystem 2. Warm light. Compared to Kindle, this costs about the same a Basic but adds warm light (great for low light reading) 3. Size. 6” screen is sweet spot for me and what I was used to compared to Nook. Very portable and lightweight. 4. Screen. Great quality reading - most modern readers are really good, this has the latest Carta 1300. 5. Water resistant. Not a must have but a nice to have for sure. 6. Price. Make sure you look at the “no ad” price for Kindle if you’re comparing. No, I don’t want ads on my reader.

dont buy it!
The device is brand new, straight out of the box. I connected it once the day before yesterday and immediately started having problems. It freezes every 10 minutes and needs to be rebooted. I updated it from the official Kobo website, but it didn't help. I did factory reset, and I repaired my Kobo account through the menu. That helped somehow, but it still freezes every hour . I'll contact Kobo support, and if they don't help, I'll be returning the device. I don't recommend anyone buy this device.

good
between the kobo clara bw and a basic kindle, i would pick the kobo despite being nearly similar yet more expensive than it's kindle counterpart. personally, i'm not interested in the kindle/amazon ecosystem as they subscribe to the "you will own nothing and be happy" model. look online of the horror stories of kindle users having their libraries nuked when licenses end. it is ironic though, considering i purchased my kobo from amazon, but that aside it's other minor things that pushed me to get a clara bw over a kindle basic. 1. the presence of an ad-supported & ad-free business model is really gross, especially considering many countries outside of the US, kindles come ad-free anyways. 2. the power button on the kobo is recessed, versus being on the bottom like a kindle; i don't like the idea of my e-reader turning on when it jostles in a bag. 3. has similar if not identical specs, otherwise, to the flagship kindle basic. fast, responsive, good dpi, and comfortably compact, and is made of mostly recycled materials. now, whether to pick a clara BW over color, while i like the option for color for $20 more, i only use my ereader for text based books and not comic books. i don't need color, and i didn't like that a color kobo without backlight was darker than a BW without backlight. that's just the nature of it, but for a regular book reader i was fine with a BW. but if you regularly read comics, a clara color would be a good option to consider. as for a kobo clara over a kobo libra (with stylus compatibility & physical buttons), again, i just wanted a simple, compact ereader. i dont take notes on an ereader, which would feel extremely performative since i read fiction books lmao. physical buttons would be awesome, but it made the whole device clunkier looking. not swag as for using the device, it works fantastically. very responsive, bright, great warm-light options, and looks crisp. lightweight and comfortable in the hand, and has usb-c so no extra weird cable. i wish there was more options for organizing books, especially as i often sideload fics from ao3, but the collections feature works fine enough.

great ereader
Great ereader as advertised but I'm only giving it 4 stars cause it rarely doesn't register my fingers and you need to buy a stylus to use the highlighting and note taking features.

Good alternative to using Kobo app in your phone and better for your eyes.
Bought this for my wife. She loves it. She was using the Kobo App on her phone, but it was giving her eyestrain issues. Switching to this fixed that issue. The screen is clearer, and the options to change some of the font and contrast made a world of difference. The only issue we have found stems from the plastic used for the housing. It is kind of slippery, which makes holding it a little annoying, but the addition of a protective case fixed that, so it really isn't a bother. She has dropped it a few times already, even before getting the case for it, and it hasn't taken any damage. Pretty durable. Good size, easy to read. Not too heavy.

Arguably the best e-reader available
I was debating between the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kobo Clara BW, but I decided to buy the Kobo after a friend recommended it. After using it for a few days, I can confidently say it was the right choice. I’ve been getting back into reading, but it can become an expensive hobby if you want to own books instead of borrowing from the library or reading PDF versions online. One of the main reasons I wanted an e-reader was the E Ink display. Compared to reading on a phone or tablet, it significantly reduces eye strain and fatigue. So when I’m really invested in a story, I can keep reading for much longer without my eyes feeling tired. The biggest reason I chose the Kobo Clara BW over the Kindle Paperwhite was the ability to easily upload my own EPUB files. I liked that I would not have to rely only on a monthly subscription which can cost upwards of $15 a month. While downloading and transferring files takes a little extra effort, Kobo makes the process very simple. You can transfer books through a USB connection or use the web upload option, both of which are straightforward. One feature that pleasantly surprised me was the built-in dictionary. I know Kindle devices also have this feature, but I did not realize it was included on the Kobo until I went through the tutorial. It is incredibly useful because I can quickly look up unfamiliar words without having to pick up my phone or search on my computer. One concern I had before buying it was the screen refresh rate. When I tried my friend’s device, it was not as smooth as a typical phone or tablet screen. However, after using it for a while, I realized that this does not really matter for reading. Since you are only turning the page every so often, the slower refresh rate is barely noticeable. It only really comes up when setting up the device or organizing books. A few tips for new buyers: turning off Wi-Fi can dramatically extend the battery life, since Wi-Fi is only needed for accessing the Kobo store, audiobooks, or transferring files through the web. I also recommend downloading Calibre, a free program that lets you edit book titles, authors, and other metadata so your library looks more organized on the device. It is easy to set up and especially helpful for fixing messy file information. Overall, I am already very happy with this purchase. Even though I have only had it for a few days, it has made reading feel more convenient, comfortable, and enjoyable. For anyone who is trying to get back into reading or wants a simple and great alternative to reading on a phone or tablet, I think the Kobo Clara BW is definitely worth the price.

Absolutely amazing
Absolutely amazing device! It has everything I needed- warm light, waterproof, small device that allows you to access and borrow library books and sideload books. If you are planning to switch or looking for a new device- this is it! Text is clear and sharp even on 0 brightness with day light (picture). Its very responsive & very user friendly ( menu is easy to navigate and use it). I returned many ereaders over few weeks due to various reasons- no warm light, too bight (i have small hands), or not a great contrast (colour screen), however this is amazing and I really hope this will last me a while!
