Great Reading
I’m a big This Old House fan and have seen Tedd Benson on several of the shows. I like his passion for and philosophy on timber framing and have enjoyed reading his book.

Informative
My husband and I are considering building a timber frame house for our retirement, so I decided to pick up this book for some research. There were very few interior or exterior design ideas included in the photography much to my surprise and disappointment. What there was was a great deal of practical information which needs to be considered in the building of such a structure. That part doesn’t interest me very much, but my husband found it to be very helpful and informative.

Great book
Great book with a good mix of design fundamentals and modern building techniques. If you want to build a drafty old timber-frame barn, look else where. This book is all about a modern energy efficient timber-frame that will last for the next 200 years. Good descriptions of how to handle all the major house systems from the foundation to plumbing and electrical. I am getting ready to build a timber-frame and would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to build one.

Great Book from design throughout construction, as well as the finished product.
This is an amazing book, which gives a person true insight on the differences of each style of project. Ted covers the facets from design inception and goes through each stage, where a future home owner of a timber frame home can and will benefit greatly. It is a very good step by step book and one for the future home builder/ owner.

I very much like the beautiful cover I think it is so pretty (and useful as I live in a timber frame)I keep it on a display picture holder.

Excellent
This book is very useful if you are planning to build your own timber-frame home. This is true if you literally want to build it yourself, or if you want to subcontract the work. It gives information on dealing with critical issues such as: the foundation, wiring, plumbing, insulation, finish work and general design considerations. It's the best book I've seen for providing a detailed overview of the timber-frame building process.

Comprehensive and informative
I am researching a (possible) future project and am trying to gather information on sustainable building and living from many different sources. The practicality and green credentials of timber construction is hard to beat. When you couple this with the natural beauty of timber and the creative imagination of designers using this material it becomes my preferred choice.Written by an experienced American designer and builder, this book is filled with information, drawings and photographs to satisfy the most demanding reader.I have, so far, had a quick read through but look forward to a more leisurely and detailed read over the Christmas holidays.Heaven is - a first-class book, a glass of Merlot and a roaring log fire.If you can't have all three - get the book - you will not be disappointed. There are many books on this subject - try this one first.

Concepts, without the calculations
I have read this book through. It covers the various concepts one needs to address, when designing a timber-frame home. This includes the foundation, the timber-frame design, the home design, the electrical and the plumbing. The book does not go into detailed design – no formulas and no design procedure. If one is interested in going the next step (detailed design), I would recommend the author’s book “Building The Timber Frame House”, in which the calculations are shown.

Inspiration.
This is the second book I have bought authored by Tedd Benson, and it is a refreshing insight into both some possibilities, and the more prosaic stuff, like figuring how to run electrical cables. It still lacks (for me) decisions such as 'which design should I use to achieve a particular roof requirement?', and I suppose Tedd considers that a little too basic for his book. That will not dissuade me, I still love this book.
