Does this pump leak oil and smoke like the robinar

If you are leaking oil, or smoking, you either overfilled the unit, or you tipped it over and have oil trapped in the exhaust. Not even the cheapi Kungflu pumps from local retail stores smoke or leak.

can you use this with a harvest freeze dryer?

Yes. It is the standard pump that comes with the freeze dryer. I have had one for years for my freeze dryer. Unfortunately the shaft seal started to leak ( a wear item that one might expect to eventually need to replace). Product box said the vacuum pump was field serviceable but my bolts holding the motor to the pump housing broke instead of unscrewing. There is YouTube video of guy trying to replace the shaft seal on this pump that had bolts break trying to remove motor too. I've asked tech support for their help but no answer. Just be aware that this unit may not be as field serviceable as packaging might suggest. Maybe they have changed the thread locker used on the bolts to one less strong after finding this problem?

How hot does the pump run? Pulled a vacuum on an ax unit and pump was extremely hot ( untouchable). Is that normal?

That is not normal! Change the oil and try again. If it still gets hot contact the manufacturer.
