A great Bike with a few minor niggles.
This is a review of the Touroll J1 ST This is not my first e-bike, I am fortunate to have the use of two others, but I am still a casual cyclist and cycle for pleasure. I have tried to break this review down into logical sections. Ordering and delivery As simple as any amazon order, the communication with the supplier was very good (they responded promptly), and delivery only took a couple of days. Delivery was also very good with good communication. Assembly The bike was very well packed, although it was obvious that the back tyre was completely flat whereas the front had some air in it. It later transpired that there was a faulty valve, which I had to fix (fairly simple once I had bought a kit). The supplier re-imbursed me for this, but as all that is needed is a simple tool and a couple of valves, it might be worth them including this in the tool kit. I managed to complete the assembly using the tool kit, apart from the bolts on the spacer bar on the front wheel strut. These were a different size to the nuts used to secure the wheels, which the tools did fit ?! Assembly was relatively easy and I used the written instructions rather than the video on you tube. Overall assembly took less than 1 hour (most of that was removing the packaging). The Bike Overall the bike looks great, but it is here that a couple of the niggles come in. Prior to delivery I was informed that the design had been updated and that the bike now came with quick release front wheels, along with a link to a video to show how these should be fitted as the handbook had not been updated. I thought this was great and my expectations increased. Unfortunately the bike supplied did not have a quick release front wheel. Obviously an older non-upgraded version, but NO ! On the bike I received there has been welded a ugly looking bracket, that doesn’t appear on any of the website photos. When I queried this I was informed it was an upgraded model that would allow a vegetable basket to be attached ! This is designed as a commuter bike, I wonder how many people when cycling home think “I know I will buy a bag of carrots, now where can I put them ?!”. This also begs the question of how many variants of this bicycle there are ? I am 6ft 3ins tall and I was a little worried whether the bike would be big enough, even though the description states it is suitable for riders up to 6ft 5ins. I have the seat up to the maximum and it is just the right height, if you are 6ft 5ins, you may need to invest in a replacement seat pole, although the leg space to the handle bars is more than sufficient. The Power assistance So both my other bikes have different assistance methods. One has a midset motor that powers the pedals. This has three settings all of which are directly related to the amount of peddle power you put in. This is the most natural form of assistance and the most realistic, however that bike cost was around 3 times the cost of this one. The other bike has a front wheel motor and again three levels of assistance, however as long as the pedals are going round you will get the corresponding level of assistance, which will determine how fast you get up to 25km per hour. So you can just gently pedal and yet be travelling quite quickly. This Touroll bike works differently, and actually the way it works is ideal for commuting. There are 5 settings but actually the power of the assistance is the same on all 5, the difference is when the assistance is effective. It states the exact levels in the handbook (and on the website) but basically each has a speed at which the assistance cuts out. This is quite clever actually. I tend to set the assistance to 3, which means I get assistance up to around 11 mph (I have set the controller to mph from km). This means when I am pulling off I have assistance to get me to a safe speed, once I am at that speed my manual peddling is up to speed to take me faster. The other time of course is when going up any incline. If my speed drops to below 11mph the motor kicks in again and gets me back up to that speed and continues to assist me until I can maintain a higher speed. Riding experience At first I was unsure of the power assistance approach on this bike, but actually it works very well and is almost comparable in ease of use to my more expensive bike. It is streets ahead of the other bike . The overall riding experience is also very good with the positioning of the handle bars working well. There are two small niggles. Firstly I have replaced the seat, the one supplied was very uncomfortable for me. I could have purchased a cover but actually there are some really good ones on line that are not expensive. The second area is the brakes !!!! On my first couple of rides these were awful, but because I was aware of that I could adjust my braking accordingly. Now that they have started to wear in, they are not bad but obviously not as responsive as the hydraulic ones I have on my main bike. I am not sure if I will replace them with hydraulic ones soon, as I have gotten used to them. Do be careful the first couple of rides though. Another area to be aware of is the gearing. The great set is set up for commuting so is relatively light. This means that in the highest gear you Will find out difficult to peddle at much over 15mph without your legs clinging 10 to the dozen (unless of course you are going down hill). Not really an issue but something to bear in mind. I am still not sure about how accurate the range of the bike is as I have never gotten near the stated range and also the first few rides I was playing around with how I set the assistance levels. Overall I think it will be quite a bit below the stated level, but there again I am not the lightest of riders, having said that it is probably going to be similar to my other bike. Overall A really good e-bike given the cost. One of my other bikes is a retail brand one that retails for slightly more than this one, and this one is far far superior. If you are looking for a commuter e-bike and don’t want to spend a few grand then I would recommend looking into this one.

Excellent bike for the price
TLDR: I'm very happy with the bike despite the minor issues. You get a lot of features at a much lower price compared to offerings from Halfords or other UK stores. Although, I can't comment on its longevity, it's performed better than I expected so far. I'd very much recommend if you're very tight on budget. === Considering the price at £540, I'm happy with the Touroll J1 ST. I mainly use it to commute on largely paved roads. Having only used it for 15 miles so far, here's what I'm happy about: - The bike was delivered around 5 days earlier than Amazon's estimate. The courier (BJS two-man) was incredibly friendly with timelines and gave me a call 30 minutes before delivery. - Assembly took around an hour (but this coming from someone who is pretty DIY savvy). - Sleek, modest, and thoughtful design. The step through frame is ideal for mounting as I have a massive 35 litre rear pannier bag. - The frame seems to manage potholes and bumpy roads well especially with substantial load on the rear pannier rack. - Compared to other bikes in this price range, it comes with more useful features such as LED reactive brake lights, simple LCD screen, front-basket attachment, that spring holder thingy for the rear pannier rack (very useful for holding down bags and things), attachment for bottle holders or other accessories, lockable front suspension and multi-tool. Some other bikes (even higher priced ones) miss one or more of these features. - With the Neco stem, you can adjust the height of the handlebar making it useful to fine tune your posture. - The motor performance and power is suitable and not very loud. It can tackle Aberdeen's hills at around 10% grade with ease. However, I have yet to test it on inclines above 10%. Update (16 Nov 2025): The motor is a bit slow but can handle 12% grade with extra weight. - Being UK EAPC compliant, Halfords were happy to check the bike and found no major issues. - Update (16 Nov 2025): Battery life is excellent considering the price. After 32 miles of riding on mixed 0 to 8% incline grade at level 2-3 assistance leaves me with 40 to 50% charge. I'm hesitant to ride on level 4 or 5 assistance due to the spongy brakes. Here's what I'm not so happy about (do note that these are small issues): - The assembly instructions are not that great. It would be better to watch the videos on YouTube or this amazon page and cross-reference with the manual. - I don't have a lot of faith with the brake pads. Even after riding for a while, they still feel spongy to the point I deliberately ride slower than usual or brake earlier to give myself more stopping distance. Even the Halfords mechanic commented on it but recommended staying with these pads for the time-being. This is not a massive issue as the pads can be swapped later. - Before my first ride, I had to realign the front brake calipers as the pads were constantly rubbing the disc. Not a big issue as this can happen during shipping and can easily be fixed. - The cadence sensor is a little slow at times. I noticed that it can take up to one second of pedaling before the motor turns finally turns on. - For someone who hasn't cycled in a long time, I found the saddle to be uncomfortable after a while. Not a big issue as I added extra seat padding from SportsDirect. - The quality of the Shimano gears are good but they can be insufficient at higher speeds. Things I can't comment on: - The Kenda tyres are fine on fairly wet roads, however I haven't tested on worse conditions. - Support and after sales. - Longevity of the bike. - Water resistance as I haven't tested in the rain.

Great value for the cost.
Good points & bad.... 1. Good points A. Inexpensive (£550 - less than half the cost of my first e-bike bought in 2022). B. Has a good battery C. The motor is powerful D. It has good lights including a rear brake light. E. It comes with mudguards, stand and cycle rack as standard. F. The gear change works well. Bad points: A. The cable-operated brakes are not just feeble, but totally inadequate. I changed the cable front brake for quality hydrolic system for only £30 and was money well spent. B. The supplied seat is REALLY uncomfortable. (However, I had to put a new seat on my two previous e-bikes so nothing new there.) C. E-bike settings. This is not so much a fault, as a different approach to ebikes. My previous e-bikes came with 5 levels of assistance: None, eco, tour, sport, turbo. The higher the assistance the easier the bike is to propel, but the faster the battery goes flat. The Touroll has only 2 levels of assistance (effectively "off" and "turbo") but 5 speed ranges. Level 1 will only use the motor up to 5mph, whereas level 5 will use the powerful motor and battery to propel you forward with little effort at 16mph. I suspect this different philosophy is dictated by the fact that the Touroll comes with a optional hand throttle (which is illegal for road use in the UK). However, the Touroll will propel you forward (legally) in pedal assistance mode for at least 30miles plus. Conclusion: A good strong bike with good gear shift, Motor, tyres, gear change and battery range. Easy and inexpensive to fix weaknesses. If I needed another e-bike, I'd happily buy another Touroll.
