An excellent book in contemporary American psychiatric history
An excellent book in contemporary American psychiatric history, clinical practice and pharmacology. The author first of all is a great clinician. Second, he writes well. Third, he is a such good story teller (not many physicians are). Forth, he reviewed American psychiatric history and background for you. If you are a medical student, a medical resident and particularly if you are studying psychiatry, this is a must-read book for you. Be careful, by the end of reading, you will feel a bit sad...

Listen to the original.
This is actually worse that Cliff’s Notes, if such a thing can be. It would suffice as an introduction to the subject matter, but if you’re looking to understand the subject and apply the discovery in your own life, definitely read the original.

First understand this is a Cliff notes sort of summary of the book. The book itself is hugely important for those in the trauma field and I was excited to see a "summary" with key takeaways and analysis. Unfortunately this is basically useless. It purports to be 32 pages to summarize a 350 page book. The actual summary part is 20 pages of 24 point type face of which there are many pages half empty to 3/4s empty reducing content by 6 pages. The last 150 pages of the book itself are a powerful analysis of all the many different therapies and when they work and when they don't. Invaluable information. The summary blows all of that off saying "the last section of the book discusses treatment options for trauma. This seems designed for the psychological professional who might use these treatments in their practice with their patients. For a lay reader it is still very interesting but there is a shift in tone and style that maybe difficult to read.". And thus it blows off over a third of the book in two sentences! I was hoping for a lot more meaningful content and analysis. This is so cursory as to be almost meaningless.

The Mind
EXcellent! But too short. Would like more specifics and examples of how trauma plays out over time. Also how PTSD is recognized.

Summary to help people better understand those that suffer from PTSD
I read the entire book by van der Kolk, enlightening and extremely helpful. The summary is a great way to help others understand how PTSD effects people in their lives.

Best analysis of mental issues
Excellent work. Read the full work. Well worth the time. Thourough, insightful, and well documented. Our government (USA) would do well to institute steps the author gives regarding the issues of mental illness and trauma in America

Is ZERO stars an option? Waste of money.
This analysis/summary book was a great disappointment and total waste of money. I could’ve easily pulled one or two sentences from each of the first 12 chapters myself. There is NO analysis/summary for Part 2 on treatment approaches. It only addressed half of the book!I’m a clinical social worker and I’ve read The Body Keeps the Score in its entirety. I ordered this out of curiosity.and with an idea of lending it to my patients. It offers so little information, i can’t even use it as an educational supplement.
