How is it for travel? Does it take up too much space in a suitcase? Would I be better off with the regular one instead of ultra-thick?

The space question is relative to the size of the suitcase and how much other stuff you're wanting to pack. However, this mat is made for travel. The square and foldable design "squares" with suitcase shapes, as opposed to tube-shaped roll-up mats that also don't want to lay in smaller flat shapes. The Khataland foldable segments let you stack it high and square or open it into flatter rectangles. As for the thickness, if the design hasn't changed, the thicker one I bought is none so thick for folding, and I wouldn't care for a mat any thinner for practice.
