Sun Tzu's The Art of War is still one of the world's most influential treatises on strategic thought. Applicable everywhere from the boardroom to the bedroom, from the playing field to the battlefield, its wisdom has never been more highly regarded. Now available in its complete form, including the Chinese characters and English text, this essential examination of the art of decisive military strategy features extensive commentary and an insightful historical introduction written by Lionel Giles, its original translator. This unique edition provides a clear English translation as well as Chinese names given in modern Hanyu Pinyin, the standard romanization system. This new edition includes an all-new introduction by scholar of ancient Chinese literature, John Minford, which places Sun Tzu into perspective for modern readersโso they may fully understand his advice and apply it in their daily lives. Sun Tzu's The Art of War arms you with the knowledge that allows all who study this book to gain victory over those who remain ignorant of its sage advice. Review: Excellent Overall - Excellent explanations and side-by-side translation of the original Chinese text. We use it for our own language development. Review: An Easy and Wonderful Translation to Read - This book is really WORTH the PRICE! I was highly disappointed after buying Sun Tzu Art of War by Ralph D. Sawyer. I immediately searched out this book by the translator's name. It is a brilliant copy of the Sun Tzu Art of War! This translation is easy to read and gives clarity of Sun Tzu Art of War with references to other Commentators and great leaders who referred to the work. This book is so brilliantly done until the average lay person can read and fully understand it!

The Superior Translation
An excellent dual-language presentation, this text of "The Art of War" provides alternating-language content in a natural page flow as opposed to side by side. This allows the reader to keep her place more easily when jumping back and forth between languages.

2500 years old but still good
Although this book is 250 pages, the actual text (traditional Chinese interspersed with English translation) is only about 60 pages and can be read in 1-2 sittings. I enjoyed the front matter, which provides historical context for the book, such as who really wrote it, and what was the political situation in China at the time. It also talks about various Chinese commentators through the millennia and attempts at translations by Europeans, which was quite interesting. One thing I found lacking about this edition was that the last 100 pages or so were "translator's notes" for each line of the text. Essentially this is commenting on the translation itself: since classical Chinese is so dense, most passages have ambiguous meaning, and this is how the translator justifies his interpretation instead of another one. Unless you're really interested in studying the original language in detail, this part will probably not be useful. I would have preferred an analysis on the meaning of the 13 chapters instead.

Came bent
Happy about the book itself but the back cover came all bent. Not a huge deal but disappointing it came that way.

Reaching back to the original text
The multiple nuances packed into the concision of classical Chinese can make Sun Tzu's passages riddles for any translation. If you have any knowledge of written Chinese, the original text can give clarity.
