Chas Addams Happily Ever After: A Collection of Cartoons to Chill the Heart of You

A basic Addams reminder
This is a collection of cartoons by Chas Addams, many of which had been unpublished. They give an overview of Addams' offbeat and often macabre humour. His cartoons inspired the 1960s TV series "The Addams Family", and some of the cartoons in this collection hint at that. One drawback with the Kindle edition is that the captions are sometimes on a different page than the cartoon they refer to. Not the end of the world, sure, but it interrupts the flow and the visual aesthetic of what is mostly a book of illustrations.I bought this book because my parents had a copy of his book, "Addams and Evil", when I was growing up, and I spent many hours looking at that book. Fortunately, some of those cartoons are included in this collection, along with ones I'd never seen. Together, they reminded me of what I liked about Addams all those years ago.All of which makes this a good basic collection of Addams' cartoons, though it would be nice to see some of his older books re-issued. Still, it's a good place to start.

Very bad print quality
Image resolution is very low on every page in the book, seems very cheaply made.

Great find - great condition
I was hoping the product would be in the condition as described, and it was. Nearly perfect condition. I'm a fan of Addams going back to the '60s, so it was great to find this collection.

Sell great, book awful
The dpi/image quality of each illustration is horrible. Everything except for the front cover and one motif page on the inside are terribly pixelated. It looks like 4x4" 75dpi images were scaled up to 8x6" without any sort of smoothing or attempt at quality retention. The illustrations are fun and full of malice and dark humor, but the quality makes this extremely disappointing. It says that it is a Simon & Schuster book, they should be thoroughly embarassed by the amateurish quality of this print that looks like some computer illiterate person saved a bunch of low quality images off of google and then went to some online self publishing book vendor and had a book printed of all the low quality google image search files...This really shouldn't be more than $3 USD with how badly it is printed. But I love Chaz Addams, so I'll keep it since I hadn't seen all of these. I hope I find these illustrations published somewhere in better quality.

REALLY Low-resolution Images; Text Fine
I am highly disappointed to have paid money for this. Mr. Addams' cartoons are beautiful, detailed, India ink masterpieces, and they are reproduced here in stunning 72 dpi, just about well enough to determine that the primary subject is human (in most cases). In one cartoon it is almost impossible to see the "punchline", as the tiny detail (a broken light bulb, served for dinner) is nearly indistinguishable from the background. In comparison (see photo), the caption text is perfectly sharp across all pages. It's just the images that suffer -- and what a shame that is, because that's what we're here for.Even his old 1960s-era paperbacks (which I also own) had more faithful reproduction than this. Pick up "The World of Charles Addams" (1991) if you'd like to revisit his classic haunts.

Quality issues
I love the cartoons by the delightfully deranged Mr Addams. However, in this volume, the drawings all look like they were copied on a second-hand, off-brand scanner. The images are pixilated and it is difficult to see small details that are quite often critical to the gags. I thought I had misplaced my glasses at first. Let’s make these images sharper, please!

I love Charles Addams' work like nothing else
I love Charles Addams' work like nothing else, and this book has quite a bit of cartoons I've never seen before. Delightfully macabre work from the creator of the Addams Family. The only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars is the printing quality of the book. I have no problem at all with "print on demand" books when it comes to novels, but for an art book the image quality is just sub-par. Sure, you'll get the joke, but lots of tiny details are just lost in a mush of low resolution. Addams' artwork was top-notch, but this collection just doesn't do justice to it.

VERY POOR Quality Images
This is an extremely poor volume. While Charles Addams's work remains as wonderful as usual, the quality of the images included in this is the main issue. The vast majority of the images appears to have been scanned or photographed at very low resolution or from a very small format. These have been blown up for publication resulting in what in my days working for magazines I would have described as "offensive pixelation". In addition to this all cartoons appear to somehow be an evened out shade of grey making it very difficult to make out any details. MOst of the cartoons however suffer greatly from the pixelation. A lot of the images depend on gleaming small details - there's one image of a bride burning something over a fire - upon which the entire joke revolves, only to be unable to tell what that small detail is - still no idea what she is supposed to be burning.Even though I was very excited about this purchase I now regret it and consider this one of my poorest purchases on amazon - not made better by Amazon describing this as "Used - Like New" to find out upon delivery there is a massive crease on the front cover. But really - I remember correcting resolution mistakes like these on 1st year graphic design students - I would fire any professional sending images like these for publishing.

Pixellated images
The image quality is very poor and pixellated throughout, which is a shame as so many cartoons are rare and unavailable elsewhere. For instance, one cartoon which depends on being able to read the sign LOVERS LEAP is spoiled because this text is illegible (fortunately I already knew the punchline!). Five stars for the content but only one star for the presentation. If you're familiar with Addams it's still a worthy purchase, but if you're new to his work avoid!

Faint pictures
I love Chas Adams but was dissapointed that nearly all the cartoons were faint and looked like draft sketches rather than the finished item ready for printing

Excellent material, not so excellent presentation
This collection is themed around Charles Addams depictions of courtship and marriage. While a few feature familiar faces, they are mostly one off characters. From the gentleman buying railway tickets to the woman's impatient reaction to her husband's attempted suicide, they all tread a dark path through human relationships, and are as hilarious as would be expected of the creator of The Addams Family. The problem arises in the means of production, as the originals appear to have been digitally processed, resulting in a general fuzziness, and in several cartoons an inability to make out the fine detail obscures the actual joke. Some cartoons are obviously idea prototypes, a couple without punchlines at all, but the artistry and situation are still appealing. Quibles aside, this is a good selection and an opportunity to look into the wider world of Chas Addams.

Illegible
This book is really poorly printed - so bad, in fact, that parts of the text are impossible to read, which makes the cartoons themselves utterly meaningless. Avoid
