A Small Circle of Friends

A Time for Turbulence and Honor
"A Circle of Friends" was obviously a low-budget film that dealt with life in the 60's and 70's. This film includes the Vietnam War, the drug culture, free sex and hard-hitting personal issues. It took me a while to get through the movie because I felt it could have been done so much better. The script was juvenile and so predictable. The acting was, well, over-acted, melodramatic and did not showcase these three actor's potential. But with what they had to work with, this is a good movie for young people to see who did not live through these eras. It showcased a time of unrest amongst the young and taking it upon themselves to change the country's stale direction. Unfortunately, we have gone back to the stale way of running things. I miss the changes that took place by a nationwide multitude of young people fighting for causes and making sure the government knew how we felt. Now, I feel like a sheep just mixed in with the apathetic herd. Baaaaa. If you have not lived through these eras, please see this film. See what WE did for YOU.

Fine character driven ensemble film!
Re-watched the 1980 film A Small Circle of Friends. I remember liking back in the early 80s and it still holds up well. It's a rare film depicting the late 60s to early 70s that gets the period right. The film is a love triangle during the 1967 to 1971 undergrad years of 3 Harvard students among the turmoil of Vietnam and other counter cultural changes in the U.S. This is such a character driven film that its interesting to note that director Rob Cohen would gain popularity later in his career directing the first Fast and the Furious film! Another cool trivia fact is pop/songwriter Jim Steiman (Two Out of Three Ain't Bad) wrote the musical score. Two tracks in the film would later become huge hits in the 1980s: Total Eclipse of the Heart (1983) and Making Love out of Nothing At All (1983)- top smashes for Bonnie Tyler and Air Supply. It's a hard film to find streaming. I ended up buying the DVD and am glad I did.

good movie about relationships develping in college
This movie is about three people who meet at college and become friends and how their lives are intertwined with the experiences that have. It has them going to college during the Vietnam War era and how the war affected people. Two men fall in love with the same woman and she cares for them and how relationships were during the 1960's and '70s. It also shows how men were drafted and went off to war while some did not have to go and how that affected their friends and family.

A Movie I Could Never Forget
I first met this movie in 1980, a young man of eighteen - a life full of adventure ahead in my college years. The performances of Brad Davis, Karen Allen, and Jameson Parker made a lasting impression on my head, heart, and soul. Leo, Nick, and Jessie are characters in a story both familiar and lasting. I first found the movie on cable - must have watched it twenty times if once. Then, didn't see it again until I ordered it from Amazon. Kudos to MGM for putting this title out (certainly not a blockbuster but a worthy release from its vault). It's a story of friendship, love, rebellion, youth, growing up, politics, art, and the messiness of life. Highly recommended from this fan!
