Is this for animals or humans?

This glucose meter is for humans ONLY.

To accurately measure blood glucose for animals (dogs and cats) an animal glucose meter must be used.

Here’s why.

Meters for humans do not deliver accurate glucose readings for pets because of differences between the “distribution of glucose in the blood” in humans vs animals.

That’s key to remember.

Humans: 58% of glucose is located in plasma and 42% of the glucose in the red blood cells.

Dogs: 87.5% of the glucose is located in plasma and 12.5% of the glucose in the red blood cells

Cats: 93% of the glucose is located in plasma and only 7% of the glucose in the red blood cells.

As you can see, the “distribution of glucose in the blood” in humans and in animals is very different. There is also a variation between the SIZE of the red blood cells between humans and animals.

Even more, humans and pets have a different PCV (packed cell volume) – humans: 37-50%, dog: 37-55%, cat: 24-45%, meaning that the number of red blood cells differs greatly.

Meters for humans are also calibrated only for human plasma. Meters made for cats and dogs are calibrated only for animal plasma. Using a human glucose meter to measure glucose levels in cats and dogs can deliver inaccurate results —ones that are often significantly different than what the pet’s true levels actually are.

Question 2

Do I need to purchase anything else besides this kit or does it include everything? It says it does, but I want to be sure that is true.

Includes everything you need. Doesn't include a standardized test solution, which allows you to test that the meter is reading within the appropriate range, or a data cable. You will need to purchase a data cable if you plan to upload your data to your computer.  You really don't NEED either -- but I got them because I'm a data geek

Does it test for ketones?

No it does not. Sorry. I have the Precision Xtra® glucometer and it does a wonderful job checking ketones.

do you need the control solution?

You do NOT need the control solution to test your blood glucose level, and not every brand offers one in their starter kits. But its good to have one if you see any abnormal readings.
