For one decent cup of cofee, how many seconds should I grind coffee beans if I want to use it in (a) cafetier (b) espresso machine

It really depends on what gear you're using, but from my own experience, it is about 10-15 seconds for a coarse grind and around 25 for an espresso-fine grind. This varied with the bean. For a pretty decent espresso, I had about 11g of coffee ground at 26 seconds.

can you adjust the fineness of the grind

No,the longer you grind the finest it gets. Very good grinder for herbs indeed. I use mine to grind red peper flakes into paprika. I also make icing powder,grinds to dust.

Can I grind grains with this ?

I use my Krups twin blade grinder for grinding coffee and also for a mix of sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, flax and hemp seeds. Hemp seeds are very hard. I guess it would also work with grains but if you wanted to grind large quantities, eg for bread, it would be tedious as it only does about 3 tablespoonsful at a time.

Guys on the bodybuilding forums are recommending using a coffee grinder for grinding down oats, would this be efficient at grinding small items?

Might not be the "Grinder" the guys on the body building scene are looking for.
