Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher - a Blu-ray package to savour.
Five films Randolph Scott made with maverick director Budd Boetticher towards the end of his long career, known as the Ranown films. Many critics have pointed out the similar themes that run through the films but there are enough differences to make each film enjoyable in its own right. The tone varies - Buchanan Rides Alone is almost a farce while Ride Lonesome, perhaps the best of the bunch, is a dark film with some stunningly beautiful images, such as the burning "Hanging Tree" at the climax. Scott is fabulous, supported by familiar faces including Richard Boone, Pernell Roberts, James Coburn (in his first film role), Lee Van Cleef and Claude Akins. Boetticher uses the short running time, big ideas and wonderful locations to ensure that these films are a cut above the normal. Great video and a copious array of extras, including 3 commentaries, and insights on Boetticher from such as Martin Scorsese, Christopher Frayling, Kim Newman, Clint Eastwood and others. Sergio Leonie acknowledged that he "stole everything" from Boetticher - this fabulous Blu-ray set is a chance to see how.

Fantastic boxset of westerns by budd boetticher starring randolph scott
I would consider myself a casual fan of the western genre but this boxset was a blind buy for me as id never seen or even heard of the movies in this boxset or even seen any movies directed by budd boetticher or starring randolph scott. After i watched the first movie in the set called The tall T i was a fan of both budd boetticher and randolph scott. All the movies in the set are very entertaining and theres some great extras in the boxset including an fantastic interview with boetticher in which he talks about hes life and the film making process for hes westerns. This is a fantastic boxset for anyone into westerns and its highly recommended!

Yeah, but
I know, it's Bud Boetticher. I'd seen the films at a B.B. season years ago and found a grind, and years later I still find them a grind. Yes, his set ups are great but you have to slog through so much drivel ( in plot and character) that I could not overcome the obstacles. However, I did enjoy watching The Tall T with the commentary on. It added a level of interest the film itself didn't.There are these directors, Sam Fuller and Hawks are two of them, whose form cannot eclipse their content. At least Hawks made brilliant comedies, but Fuller and Boetticher (which is where we began)... I cannot ignore what they choose to put up on the screen. There's also John Ford swinging from the silly to the fabulous, but that's another story.

Realistic West
It's been a marathon, I watched these 5 BDs, I read the booklet, in my opinion and I repeat in my opinion...COMANCHE STATION is the best of these so-called b-westerns, it's a superior movie I think an a-western, then THE TALL T and RIDE LONESOME, then DECISION AT SUNDOWN, then BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE, the extras and the booklet tell us everything about these ranown projects, great great job indicator, fantastic release!
