Lovely, smoky and peaty without being heavy on phenols
Lovely Islay malt at a bargain price. The ten year old is a bit of a thug in comparison. This has a more subtle range of flavours typical of peaty, smoky Islay malts, which makes it a great every day nightcap.

Marmite for some but great for me.
This whisky is for lovers of Islay malts with its medicinal, peaty boldness. Not for the faint hearted but I love it. It is worth having in the cupboard just for the stimulating conversation it will promote.

Perfectly smooth and peaty enough - but less smoky than the 10 y/o
I know nothing about whiskey. Never liked the stuff.....then a couple if years ago someone gave me a drop of the Laphroaig 10 year old and I changed my mind. I didn't know what 'peaty' meant until this was explained to me - but I now know I LOVE peaty whiskey!I'n currently buying the Select as can't afford the 10 year old. Yes, it's less peaty, but still smooth and delicious straight out the bottle with no mixer or ice. In fact this is probably smoother than the 10 year old, but does deliver less of a smoky wallop - but enough to keep me very happy :)Incidentally I've now tried a couple of other whiskeys describing themselves as 'peaty' on the supermarket blurb (one was a Talisker) and neither tasted the slightest bit smoky to my admittedly unrefined palate and both needed ginger ale to make them drinkable. This stuff goes down like honey by comparison. However i'll continue to treat myself to the more expensive 10 year old Laphroaig for Christmas & birthdays and may even branch out to explore some other peaty whiskeys if and when affordable.

Not as good as the Laphroaig Quarter Cask
I had previously bought and very much enjoyed the Laphroaig Quarter Cask so thought I would give this one a go when it was on offer. It is not bad, but definitely not as good as the Quarter Cask. Quite smokey so might not be to everyone's taste. Solid 4* for me, but not one that I will be rushing to buy again

Amazing whisky for peaty/smoky drasm enjoyers
Are there better smoky/peaty whisky's on the market? for sure, but not at this price point. If you love peaty/smoky whisky's or are buying a gift for someone who does then dont overlook this classic Dram.
