What is the length difference between the long and short tips?

Long tip measures 4 1/2" from tip to where the cable joins. The shorter tips are not quite 3 1/2".I hope this helps.

can the longer cables be used with the special short tips that come with 8" cables?

Yes you can use the special short tips with the longer cables. I have both sets and have used the short tips with both types of cables. The best interchangeable sets I have ever used.

I love them, my only complaint is they don't incluce a #1, #2 or #3, and I have not been able to find where to buy just those points to add to my set.

Actually, I am not sure the Dreamz comes in a smaller size tip, but you can get the Karbonz Regular length or Special (short) tip in a US 2.5 (which is 3.00 mm) and a US 3 (which is a 3.25 mm). The join is the same as the Dreamz, so all your cables will fit. I see neither on Amazon, but they are out there and they do work. Hope this helps.
