Heartbreakingly beautiful
A beautiful, distressing book that captivated me from start to finish. I am studying French at Undergraduate level and found the French simple and easy to understand, but at the time very poetic. The trauma of war is barely described but subtly permeates the entire story. The friendship between the two lonely, old men is touching, and the rare perspective of a refugee uprooted from the home he has known all his life is really insightful. I enjoyed the ambiguity of places and names, because it makes the novella seem like a fable on the effects of war on civilians.

Short and easy read but although the story is very simple with only a handful of characters, it is very moving with an interesting twist at the end.

A heartwarming story
The story of a grandfather who does the best he can for his tiny granddaughter, by taking her to another country. The countries concerned are never named but it becomes more obvious as you read. It also tells of a remarkable friendship between two elderly men, who come to have a wonderful understanding of each other despite not knowing a word of each other's language. Rather a sad story but full of warmth.I read this in French and found the wording simple enough for me to be able to translate without too much difficulty.

A great read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a moving and emotional story about two main characters and la petite fille. It describes the loneliness and the hurdles that refugees face in starting a life in a new county, whilst haunted by a tragic personal history.

a good read
A poignant tale. Monsieur Linh arriving by boat with what remains of his family and a suitcase i.e. all his possessions as a refugee in a strange country and a language he cannot understand. Somehow there is hope when he befriends a man of similar age who too is recently bereaved. They strike up a relationship and somehow communicate. However as a refugee Mr Lihn is about to be rehoused from the area he has now come to know i.e. from where he lives to where he meets his friend. What happens next ...................is intriguing.
