Realistic and unpretentious
Having just finished this story, I find the ending to be a very satisfyingly happy and believable finish. Myself being in my early 60's and married to a man soon to be 64, having our own 3 grown children who have families of their own and watching them experience the joys and sorrows that so often come with parenthood, as well as being reminded of parts of our own personal trials and of married life along with the beauty of the sheer wonder of being alive, I appreciate the unpretentious and honest conversations and personalities of the characters in this story. The emotions are thick and laden with passion yet not to the point of drama just for the sake of drama. Our home for the past 40 years has been a 5 acre piece of land we purchased from my husband's parents when they left the much larger farm for a new adventure. We've homesteaded it, building our own home, and outbuilding, clearing land, farming, gardening and landscaping as we please. The thought that we are likely to face the need to leave it someday, assuming we are lucky enough to see our own golden years, is a fact that does not in the least escape either of us.My hope is that we will be able to do so with as much thoughtfulness and grace as is portrayed by the characters of Mama June and Preston.Thank you for offering this, the main reason I chose to read it was that our son and his family moved to the Ashley area of Charleston a few years ago and we've had the opportunity to visit and learn about the beauty and the rich history of this part of our country. I was delighted to find just as rich of a tale to relax with while reading. I will definitely be reading more of Ms Monroe's work.

Learning how sweetgrass baskets are made was very interesting.
Although a good book, I found Sweetgrass more difficult to get through than other books by Mary Alice Monroe. The story was basically about a family in long-standing crisis. I found it a bit heavy with no lightness to offset the sadness. What I did enjoy was learning more about the Gullah culture and the art of making sweetgrass baskets. I recommend the book for that reason.

One of my favorites that I read years ago
I bought this is hardback when it first came out and wanted a copy on Kindle since I'm thinking of purging all the books - or most of them - from my house. They have become just too many to house much longer but I didn't want to lose my favorites and almost all of Mary Alice Monroe's are my favorite's!

A Beautiful Story
Read this book if you want a lovely slow, beautiful, family saga. The ambiance of place is a character in this story. Mary Alice Monroe is a master in the art of capturing time and place, memory and the present moment all at once. The reader feels the breezes, smells the moisture in the air, and is a part of the family history, it's sorrows, it's triumphs, births and deaths. Portions of this story devoted to the making of sweetgrass baskets and the struggle to preserve this art form as well as any land still growing sweetgrass are especially interesting. This is a slow relaxing read. Just immerse yourself in this wonderful story. I actually listened to most of this book on Audible. I felt that Audible did a great job in capturing the dialogue. I highly recommend Audible for this story.
