Does this spear come with a line so you don't lose the spear?

No, a pole spear isn't meant to actually ever leave your hand. There's a rubber band on the end that you hook your hand through and stretch it to the top of the spear where with the same hand you hold the spear until you are ready to release it. You will use it to spear something that's a few feet from you. If you are wanting to spear something further away you are wanting a spear gun, which does come with a line attached to the spear.

Is it 5 feet long including the foot long single prong tip, or is it 5 feet with just the fiberglass pole?

The pole itself is 4.5ft and the tip itself, which is a nice barbed tip, is 1ft and unscrews. The spear flies nice though

how does this work exactly

You put the band around you wrist, reach way up on the rod and then release it. It's a good way to get fish close up and an excellent way to teach kids how to spear fish. In the Bahamas you can only use pole spears or Hawaiian Slings. It's like a sling shot underwater. This is a small one for kids.

How do you put the black band on the actually pole? It came all separate.

Run the black cord that is attached to band through the hole of the pole once your through to the others side take the band and run it through the loop and pill tight and Walla!
