CompTIA Security+ Certification Study Guide, Third Edition (Exam SY0-501)

I passed the SY0-501 test with this book
It is written so clearly, that it covers technical subjects without being so dense that it is confusing. Each subject is mapped to the test objectives but presented in a more organized manner. There are end of chapter tests, summary notes, and things to watch for. There are lots of labs and videos plus whole tests. The hard-copy book frees you from electronic devices and the PDF book on the CD makes it easy to search and review the subject matter as it relates to different uses and applications. You can install the "Total Tester" from the CD to take tests on your computer like the actual exam. I found the Performance Based Questions on the CD to be most like the real test.

Practice material was nothing like the test and the performance based questions never did ...
Book was interesting, but really didn't help with the exam. Practice material was nothing like the test and the performance based questions never did work. I hadn't taken the exam since 2009. For the most part CompTIA Security+ and any of the other certs are a scam and money maker for the companies. More concerned with your test taking abilities than your knowledge.

I can get more useful information off the back of a three year olds weekly reader.
waste of money. That they include an ancient CD is a sign.

Good Read, easy to follow.
So far so good. Book is very easy to follow and learn from. Won't take the test for another 2-3 months.

Lazy update for SY0-501 and doesn't cover all the syllabus - edited
I've got the SY0-301 version of this but never got round to taking the test. Now I've bought this version to complement the Sybex book I've got. It's good. How good I won't know until I take the exam but the subjects are gone into thoroughly without getting too technical. - Edit: It doesn't cover all the questions I got set in the exam.My issue is with the labs and CD-ROM.Obviously a lot of people won't have a CD-ROM drive which will make it irrelevant but I found it hadn't been updated since the previous SY0-401 exam so it doesn't fully match the book. The other issue is that it asks you to set up a HyperV lab with a private network and Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Server 2012 and Kali Linux VMs. There is a half hour demo of how to do this on the CD-ROM unfortunately Windows 7, Windows 8.1 are not available as evaluation copies from Microsoft. If you aren't prepared to give this a go then this probably isn't the qualification for you.Overall - a good book with some good resources but hurried out to meet the new syllabus. - Edit: This still holds, I so wanted to be able to give this book a high rating but, after having done the exam (and passed), I can say that it only seemed to cover about 70% of the syllabus. The Sybex book I bought, also only covered 70% but there was enough over lap to cover some 90%.My recommendation - bite the bullet and buy the CompTIA study guide. I didn't but wish I had.
