Does this work as a good air conditioner?

It is NOT an air conditioner. It will circulate air as a fan, but there is no cooling provided in this unit. Only heat. That said, it works well as a heater and a fan.

How hot is the unit when in heat mode? Will it burn someone who touches it?

Not hot at all. It will eventually heat a small room but it does so without blasts of hot air or hot to the touch surfaces. It's heating fan is a lot less robust than its cooling fan.

How big is the maximun room cover of the fan?

Well, I read the manual through twice. Nothing mentions the range or size of room for the fan. However, we use it in our RV. The approximate SF in the living room part would be 260SF. We find it warms up that area nicely.

How is energy use compared to other space heaters?

Hi Anthony,I am not sure as I have only used Dyson heaters from the AM04 to this AM09. These work well and I don't notice a difference in my Xcel bill. I have had hundreds of Dyson products through the years.
