Good and effective

The Monarda Oil arrives in a film wrapped printed cardboard box. The film wrap is non-recyclable. Printed on the box are the use instructions and the expiry date 15/08/2027. There is no GMP logo - GMP is important for product quality. The oil (60ml) is contained in a brown glass bottle stoppered with a glass pipette. The scent of the oil is floral and not like the bergamot (from an orange) used in earl grey tea. It is a pleasant floral scent. The claim is this is an essential oil and that it should be diluted in a carrier oil or shampoo. Once diluted it can be applied to the skin - I would not use it undiluted. As an aroma therapy it should still be diluted but less so. Monarda oil has been researched in small studies. The oil contains several bioactive compounds, particularly thymol and carvacrol. As an aroma therapy it may have a calming effect - possibly due to the linalool content. It may also relieve congestion and respiratory discomfort. Some of the other claims have no research basis. Topically (diluted in a carrier oil) it may repel insects and have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. The current price is £10.00 for 60ml - this is not a high price for an essential oil and consistent with other options available on Amazon - but per litre it is about £167.00 so plenty of room for profit and I cannot state that it is not an essential oil because it is too low cost compared to others on the market.

Positives:- 100% Pure Monarda Essential Oil. Cruelty-free, and vegan. Premium therapeutic grade. Suitable for a variety of purposes. Antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Glass bottle - with glass dropper. Negatives:- Only that I was sent the 30ml size to review, but it is much cheaper pro-rata to buy the larger 60ml size. Observations:- Came shrink-wrapped in an overprinted cardboard box, which contained the 30ml Bottle of Monarda Pure Essential, and 2 mini cosmetic brushes. Conclusion:- I had not heard of Monarda before I saw this product on the Amazon Vine list of available products to review, but I am very glad that I submitted a request which was accepted, because this is an excellent multi-purpose 100% Pure Essential Oil. It has some similar properties to Tea Tree Pure Essential Oil, but with a much more pleasant fragrance, which also makes it ideal for use with a diffuser, and when used for that purpose a few drops go a long way. I am giving this product a 5 star rating based on the larger 60ml size, because, at the time of writing this review, it is so much better value on the Amazon UK website, costing only £1.10 more than the 30ml size.

Apart from the positive effects it is meant to have for skin, hair etc. this Monarda essential oil also works very well in a diffuser which is how we use it. The smell it creates in the room is very pleasant and may also ward off flying insects although we'll need to wait for the summer months to see if that is indeed the case. It is very good value for money at £4.64 at the current time and so I can recommend this.

This is sold as 100% pure essential oil. I don’t think it is. Firstly it’s oily. Essential oil is not supposed to be ‘oily’. It’s supposed to be able to evaporate without leaving much of a residue. This failed the tissue test (not 100% accurate, but a good guide), and feels oily to the touch unlike every other essential oil I’ve felt. Secondly it’s being sold at £9.99 for 60ml. Monarda Fistulosa is much more expensive than this, considerably so. The bottle smells like lemongrass, and a little bitter, nothing floral or bergamot-like at all. It should be slightly sweet and vaguely bergamot-ish. The instructions say to mix with a carrier oil for scalp application, but omits this dilution instruction for application to the eyelashes and eyebrows. It could be said that it is implied, but someone is going to put this on neat. If it is neat that is. I’d not be putting a pure essential oil on my eyes neat. Which leads me to believe this is already diluted, that, the price, and the oiliness. This then begs the question, what is it diluted with? You’d want to be careful if you have an allergy. The ingredients list simply says ‘monarda Oil CO2 distillation’ - granted CO2 distillation can slightly change a scent profile, but not this much I don’t think. Finally there is no INCI name on the bottle - it should say Monarda Fistulosa, - essential oils usually display the INCI name for correct identification. I’m assuming therefore that something is erroneously or deliberately wrong with the labelling. It’s not an unpleasant oil, but given I’m suspicious of what’s in it, I’m not sure what I’ll be using it for.
