You could learn this info in about 20 years, or just buy this book right now.
I have had several other lizards for many years, so the next step would be an Iguana. Many people go the iguana route first and quickly learn how difficult they can be to own. Even though I would call myself a competent amateur herpetologist, I had no idea what I was getting into when we rescued our iguana. Once I got this book I was amazed at the information presented here.About the author:Melissa Kaplan is possibly the greatest resource today for anything relating to big lizards. She has been all over the web since it began. Her knowledge is vast, yet very accessible. Blend that with the tried and true For Dummies format and you get a tome of great wisdom and easy to read format. As a reference:An example of this is I talked with a couple of other iguana owners about an issue I was having with Spikey. The both had different answers that were both vague and not all that helpful. Once I received this book I looked up this issue and there was in-depth analysis and remedy for the issue. The whole book is like that. You can find simple "gee that is nice to know" right down the line to lifesaving tips. All presented in a digestible format. The end of the book contains massive list of all the plants and herbs that are both beneficial and fatal for your iguana.Steal this book:Well maybe not, however, it is so valuable to an iguana owner I would question them if I did not see this book in their library. Sure the internet is out there and Melissa has most of this info out on her website. It is not as complete as this book and her website even refers to the chapters in this book that explain what she may be discussing on her site.Summary:All in all this is more than a reference, it is a valuable tool that you should own if you are thinking about owning a green iguana, own one for a few months, or are an "expert". All of the bases are covered here.Thank you for reading my review.

Read This Book Before You Buy An Iguana!
This book is an excellent resource for both novice and so-called expert Iguana owners. It would be especially useful for any prospective Iguana owner. Iguanas grow to be very big lizards in a relatively short period of time. They can be agressive, and territorial. There are many husbandry requirements thatthe local pet store will never tell you. In fact, if you follow most pet stores advice, you will end up with a dead Iguana. This book should help prevent this from happening. The first chapter is regarding whether the Iguana is the right pet for you. It should be read before deciding on an Iguana as a pet. remember, these are not domesticated animals. There are also excellent chapters on housing, feeding, and socialization of Iguanas. Finally the book disproves much misinformation provided by older books, and disseminated by pet stores. For instance, many pet stores sugest feeding cat food to juvenile Iguanas. What they don't tell you is that while this results in a quick growing Iguana, it also results in an Iguana dying at about four years of age from kidney failure. There is an excellent resource section in the appendix, with useful websites and references to manufacturers of various reptile products including cages, food, and heating systems. This book should be required reading before the purchase of any Iguana.

Nice book
Really scary book. The more you read it, the more you realize that no one should have an iguana. Fun book too! Also thick, very thick.

The only book you will ever need!
While you should read other books, if you get this one you will be set! I got this used for $4.00! Great quality and has the best of the best info. But I do recommend reading this in advance as green iguana's are classified as advance reptiles and for a good reason! Trust me I love mine to death but she is tough thing to take care of and work into your life if you are not prepared. The info and pictures are great. From an iguana owner who's iguana is now 19 months now, this is book for any person wanting to get an iguana! Also check out the greenigsociety.org for more info on iguanas and a message board to talk to. 5 stars!

Every iguana owner's manual
If you're going to get an iguana, you must read this book, although I'd say buy the other great book on iguanas by James Hatfield as well because they compliment each other. Some sections in Kaplan's book feel like there isn't enough detail but on the other hand there is a lot of very useful information that you can't do without. This book is US-oriented but UK owners won't feel shortchanged. The only 'issue' I encountered was that collard greens, which are iguana diet's staple, aren't readily available in the UK, but it turns out that they can be easily replaced by other calcium-rich foods like okra, so no problem here. The only other problem I have is that books on iguanas don't tell you really how to set up a habitat. Perhaps the authors don't want to endorse any kind of product but it would be really helpful if there was such info included as: which UV light to instal, and which heat bulb or basking light and other equipment, in order to achieve perfect living conditions for your iggy. I bought my ig off someone with what they said was a full setup but it turned out not everything was working properly so I had to experiment with the bulbs and temperature-controllling devices, and luckily my ig survived one week in less than great conditions, but it was a very stressful experience for the newbie iguana owner that I am. I'd read two books on iguanas and I thought I knew enough but I still had to figure out quite a few details on my own. I would've liked to find them in Kaplan's book but I didn't. Because of that I can only give the book 4 stars but it really is a book that you do need if you plan to keep your baby alive.

iguanas for dummies
A very informative book with lots of help for the amature lizard keeper like me. However I am a sucker for coloured pictures so I was a little bit disapointed on that score. However for all the information you get in this book, I found it well worth the price. Plus buying it on AMOZON I got a good deal on it too!
