Great book but needs an update
It was a great resource for our recent trip to the Uncompahgre National Forest. As stated in many of the previous reviews, the details provided were valuable in selecting and actively managing the hikes (e.g., elevation gain, pictures, difficulty rating, detailed directions to trailheads and on the trail, view descriptions, etc). I would say the only two minor drawbacks for me were (1) it didn't include some of the trails that we just happened to find that had some of the greatest views of the San Juan mountains and Uncompahgre Plateau, and (2) since the book was written in 2013, I don't think the book accounts for the level of deterioration of the roads since that time (e.g., If the book states you can use an SUV, you MIGHT be able to, but you would most likely need a 4x4 with todays road conditions). Nevertheless, it was a valued reference that I am VERY glad I purchased!

What a wonderful book
We hike in Colorado 1-2 weeks per year. It is hard to look at trail maps to decide which trail to hike. This book solves all that. It is a wonderful well written book with information that you won't find anywhere else. The authors did a great job of explaining things. The pictures are great also. Now we don't have to waste time trying to figure out which hike to try - we can get out and hike! Thank you for putting so much information in one book.

Seeing Clearly: Here's the Best Backpacking Guide I Have Ever Used
This is a very different guide. It is the best I have ever found. It provides accurate, intelligent, wonderfully clearly presented previews and also practical when-you-are-there advice and guidance. Its combination of photos of the terrain and clear superimposed best route lines of advance makes off trail backpacking much easier.I go for three weeks of backpacking every September and hike for shorter periods through the year. I have probably red 100 hiking guide books. There is nothing that compares to this wonderful contribution.

Detailed and colorful
We used this book during a trip to Ouray, Ridgway, and Silverton Colorado in July, 2014. Lots of good data to help us choose hikes. Great photographs, detailed descriptions of trails. It covered a few different hikes from Kelvin Kent's Ouray Hiking Guide. Interesting double rating system: one rating for the "approach" part of the hike, and another for the "destination" part. As with most hiking guides, "moderate" to them means "pretty darn hard" to me. With this book and Kent's book, I felt we had a pretty complete guide to the area's trails. An expensive book, but I thought it was well worth it.

well worth it!!!! Very detailed
This book is amazing! It gives you everything you need to know (only thing missing was if dog friendly). For every trail it tells you the terrain of the trail, elevation, elevation gain, distance, how long it takes, and difficulty level. It also gives you a map of each trail breaking it down into sections and tells you what to except for each section and the distance to the next section. And colored pictures labeled with where they were takin along the trail. A ++++. worth every penny

Not quite what I had hoped for
I was hoping for a variety of hiking possibilities for my upcoming trip to Colorado, but this book focuses very narrowly on hikes to summits and high mountain passes. Also, the trail maps are lacking in the level of detail that I really wanted.

and this guide book was a wonderful aid. The hikes in the book are well ...
This is the second book I have purchased from the Author. This is an exceptional guide book. I spent a week hiking in the San Juan National Forest in September, and this guide book was a wonderful aid. The hikes in the book are well documented with pictures, mileages, GPS coordinates, and even elevation profiles. I recommend this book to the novice hiker and the expert alike. Another quality product from Anne Poe. I highly recommend this book.

Best Ever!
This about is the best hiking guidebook I've ever bought. My girlfriend and I bought this book leading up to our vacation to Ouray, and it honestly made the trip. Everyday we planned out what we would do and what roads we would take based on this book. It has great maps, and lets you know what type of car you would need for each hike. I can't recommend it enough. We bought a few other guide books that we didn't even end up bringing with us because this one was so good. Anyway this year we are planning our Crested Butte trip based on their guidebook for that area.
