In Hawai'i, fish do it differently
I already knew this classic book. I just wanted to have a copy on hand again. Jim Rizzuto is a legend in this field. The book is a lively and authoritative account of the distinctive ways in which ocean angling is practiced in Hawai'i. As a marine biologist I've myself done a bit of "deep sea fishing" from my own boat. I don't pursue gigantic trophy billfish (they have enough enemies without me), but rather those more abundant high-end marine predators who are so delicious to eat - such as the one Hawai'ians call ono. Although I've never fished Hawai'ian waters, I did go so far as to have a couple of trolling rods custom made by master craftsmen in Hawai'i. As a marine biologist I was fortunate to share a few underwater adventures with that legendary Hawai'ian figure and dean of marine ichthyologists, Jack Randall. We share the same first name and middle initial. It seems every time you go diving with that man you come up with a couple of new species. On my one, all too short visit to Hawai'i I had the privilege of visiting Jack and Helen in their Kane'ohe home. It seems an age ago (I am now 84 - and Jack is 92 and still going strong). There are a lot of fishing books and articles by Jim Rizzuto. This one is the foundation stone. It is fascinating from beginning to end, revealing many things unsuspected by those who have not tried their wits and techniques against the amazing wealth of marine fishes who inhabit or visit the unique marine environment of the Hawai'ian islands. The geology of Hawai'i is unique - and so is the ecology and behavior of the many fishes - some of them world-wide travelers - to be found and caught there. Hawai'i is different and unique - geologically, ecologically, culturally, even politically (let's not forget what happened to the brash Captain Cook when he disregarded a local tapu) - and so is the behavior of even the most world-wide-travelling fish species when they inhabit or visit Hawai'ian waters. This book contains an incredible wealth of information - and presents it in an endlessly fascinating way. A classic, as I said at the beginning.
