When Dali met Disney
Donald and Mickey: The Persistence of Mickey (Walt Disney's Comics & Stories) collects a number of (mostly) 21st-century foreign-language comics stories from around the world – Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Denmark, all translated so seamlessly into idiomatic English that you can’t tell the difference. There are two short American stories from 1933 and 1955 included also. The collection opens with an Italian story telling of Salvador Dali’s visit to Walt Disney in 1946 (which really happened, and the ‘lost’ film they made together was eventually released in 2003); this story, however, sees Mickey, Donald and Goofy all taking part and getting lost in Dali’s surrealist art.Surrealism (of one sort or another) plays a part in several of the stories in this collection, filling more than half of the book, with the ‘usual’ stories filling the rest – all superb humorous adventure ones. These were really entertaining stories, both the long and the short ones, with witty scripting and superb artwork.
