How do i know which size to purchase? how do they fit compared to small, medium, large earbuds for listening to music?

I'm not the best person to answer perhaps. I found them useless. No better than cheap chinese plugs I use for swimming. Why did I buy them? I've owned 4 pairs of etymotic headphones and consider them the best in the world. I've owned custom mould UE5s and Etys are better and their fit with the triple flange (for me) is perfect so ... I'm an Ety fan and expected these to be great. Perhaps I should have persisted and of course take other people's (positive) views into account...

What would happen if you used them for shooting

Never used them for shooting so I couldn’t say. I do know that there are plugs designed to protect the ears from the noise of guns. Best google it to find out.

Are these washable, and if so can they be lent to someone else after washing?

The rubber bell ones, yes, although I would pop them off the hard plastic base before gettnig them wet. As for lending them to someone else, I'm not sure I would personally recommend that without dousing them in milton fluid before using them again myself.

Can they be returned if they don't fit?

You would need to ask Amazon as I wouldn't think so. I would always recommend the more expensive version as it has all sizes and you are guaranteed a fit,
