One to pack for summer holidays
This isn't the kind of book I'd usually go for but I was looking for some good, light holiday reading, and this really was perfect for reading by the pool. I got through it really quickly and found myself really carried away by the twists and turns of the story.I'm not surprised to hear that one of Musso's books has been made into a Hollywood film, as his style is very cinematic and you can imagine the mix of thriller, romance etc working well on screen too. In fact reading his books is a bit like settling down to watch a movie with a bucket of popcorn - a bit of fun escapism.

A good book, but not an amazing one!
There's nothing wrong with this book really, other than all the hype about how amazing it is. I was rolling along just fine for almost the first half when "the coincidence" appears (actually probably not a coincidence after all, but that's not made clear until the very end). Now, I hate plots that rely on coincidences, especially stonking great big ones like this. So I put it down for a few days, but, ever the dutiful Vine reviewer, finally got around to finishing it, and actually found the second half rolled along nicely and I had no trouble getting to the (slightly unexpected) end.I think maybe this book started out as something much longer, and was then edited down and down to a standard book size, losing quite a few of the hows and whys along the way (for example, when he's saying goodbye to Camille, why does "an angel pass by above and lightly brush the last rays of the winter sun with its wings." I could understand it if Camille was significant to the book in some way, or if there were other angelic fly-by's - but Camille vanishes, and the angels don't make any other appearances that I could spot.) Once I started trying to work this out, I ended up with lots of questions over how it had all been engineered, in fact as I type this review I'm thinking of more...Will I recommend this to others? Yes.Will I read it again? Maybe - just to see if I missed some clues early on...Is it a keeper? No.

Great little romantic thriller with a difference
Martin meets Gabrielle whilst working in San Francisco for a few months after finishing his law degree. They share a brief but life-changing love affair that lasts just days, and then it ends when he returns to France. Neither of them ever forgets the other. Years later, Martin is now working in Paris as a police detective tracking down art thieves, and there is one in particular, the greatest one in the world, going by the name of Archibald McLean, who he is determined to catch. Meanwhile, Martin wonders what has happened to Gabrielle over the years, as he has never again felt in love as he did with her, and feels she is what has been missing from his life. Is there any way that there is a connection between her and the case he is working on?I found this a fairly quick read due to the style, the action moves on quickly and often there are short paragraphs or sections skipping between one scene and another, jumping back for example from what Martin is doing to where Archie is and back again. This gives the novel a good pace and keeps the reader engaged as the pursuit progresses. The two main settings are Paris and San Francisco and I found the author used these well in creating an impressive backdrop for the story. The novel is written in three parts, with the final third taking an unexpected and unusual turn. This story combines romance, a bit of a thriller, and elements of the supernatural or magical. I enjoyed this and it was a bit of a different read for me, having the different elements to the story that it did, and I felt it was a very good English translation of the original French.

Not what I was expecting at all!
Ok, I have to admit I wasn't expecting to enjoy this. In fact, the cover is too soppy-looking for my liking but I'm glad I persevered. It started off quite slow but once the action got going I couldn't put it down. The twists keep coming and the one at the end had me completely fooled. Great characters (Scottish art thief and Paris detective) and the locations switch between France and the USA. How would I describe it? A romantic thriller. But very funny in places.Only found out after that Guillaume Musso is a French (should've guessed by his name!) and this was a translation. Surprised me but it made the book more exotic. My French isn't good enough (ha ha) to read his other French versions so more Musso in English please!
