does it require a battery or wiring in to car?

Hi Matt, the altimeter does not use any wiring or battery to operate. An altimeter uses the various "pressures" from the sea shore to the highest mountain passes. When I got mine, I set it to 500', which is our elevation during the winter. Travelling through the Nevada mountain passes, the meter hit the elevation, according to the pass elevation signs along side the road, right on the nose. We were at 7600' and it was very accurate. If you are thinking of getting one, rest easy, as they are great once the original elevation is set. That's very simple, also. Good luck.

does it show from sea level up?

Yes, the smallest altitude displayed is 0'. However, it should be noted that in the very few instances where you might be somewhat below sea level, the needle will move to the left of the 0' indicator (thus reading say 15,800' feet - in such instances, you would certainly know by your surroundings that you were not above 15K', but rather 200' below sea level).

What are the dimensions of this?

I haven't measured it but would estimate to be about 2-1/4 inches square. I have it on my dashboard to the left of my steering wheel. It is visible but not in the way. The numbers are pretty small but it is easy to read because of the discrete 1000' lines.

is it mounted by adhesive pad? suction cup?

It is mounted on an adhesive pad. Once the pad is mounted, it'll take some serious effort to peel it off the dashboard. The alt. itself can be removed from the pad and used for a hike, bike ride, etc.

WORKS WELL & ACCURATE

Worked well on holiday in Europe. A mountain pass marked as 2030 metres. showed as just over 2000 metres on the altimeter. That's pretty darn accurate for a £60 piece of equipment. For real accuracy the device should be adjusted daily; had we had a low pressure storm forecast we would have adjusted the device, in practice we rarely needed to fiddle with it, occasionally readjusting when at sea level. A fascinated gadget, we found it revealing to discover high altitude villages and roads that would have gone unremarked previously. The altimeter is now a permanent fixture on the car dashboard. Excellent value.

Great piece of kit. Works well, it’s accurate an easy to read when mounted on the dash. I use it to check altitude, when driving to ski sites and, to assist in weather forecast.
