Must Buy if You Own the Base Game
The Beyond the Veil expansion for Cards of Cthulhu is an absolute must-buy if you own the core game. It adds two new mechanics (cult powers and investigations) while adding more cards to the base set. My only gripe with the expansion, which is totally worthy of a one-star deduction, is the investigations. When you read the rulebook on that, it's a jumbled mess. The sentences and paragraphs are very disjointed in the sense that what should be said here should have been said there, you know? This creates a lot of confusion. To give you an idea, be very careful to use The Detective investigator's ability properly. It says "freely roll 1 investigation die." This is the investigator's ability, so you need to take him/her on the investigation itself. You don't let your follower get the free die. I have seen one particular YouTube through done by Paul Darcy where he totally forgot this rule and wound up butchering his playthrough. I also disagree with the rule that you have to do a Hurry spell (i.e. pay 2 experience) if you want to attack and investigate at the same time, provided your investigator is sent to do both. You tend to run out of XP quickly, and you're totally screwed if you draw a minimum of 2 investigations in your opening hand. This means that you're going to have to completely fail at least 1 investigation unless you succeed at all of them by using only your followers. Chances are you will need your investigator for one of them.So overall, this is a must-buy if you own the base game. A couple of rules nuances that are confusing or easily missed make this 4 stars out of 5.

More than just an expansion
This expansion adds more than just new cards, it streamlines the game play. It further explains the basic rules to make things easier/clearer, but does add more variance. There are cards to make each board more difficult, there are more characters, another board so you're fighting 5 monsters at the same time! Most of the cards are exactly like the base set cards, just purple for the new board. The new baddie artwork looks like an overly aggressive shrimp but it's not important. I don't particularly like any of the artwork but that's trivial on my part. The box also includes a handful of 5 point coins which is nice. What it doesn't do is expand the two player game. This game is basically a one player game, which is a good thing. When I'm alone I reach for Cards of Cthulhu because it's fast, stressful, and quick to set up. This expansion is a must.
