Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas (2018 Artwork Refresh) [DVD]

Dreamworks did two excellent animated features which seem to have been lost in the mists of time. One was The Road to El Dorado with Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline, as two comic adventurers which has recently come out in blu-ray. The other is Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas, starring Brad Pitt as Sinbad, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the love interest, Joseph Fiennnes as the Prince/childhood friend, and Michelle Pfeiffer as the goddess of chaos who is the villain of the piece, trying to foment discord because that's what she does. The animation in this movie is excellent and very colorful. The story stresses the importance of loyalty, and there is some information about the early Greek cities and the Gods. There is plenty of action to keep kids interested and plenty of visual beauty despite the fact that it is an earlier animated film. The only problem is - wait for it - you will be lucky if you find a copy of it. It is able to be streamed from amazon.us - I didn't check. uk. Luckily I bought this when it first came out, so I have a copy, but I bought a back up copy from uk (who had 3 copies at the time.) I'm glad that there is a streaming version somewhere. With this brilliant cast, the gorgeous scenery, the action-packed plot, this is one which also should come out in blu-ray.

I hadn't seen this movie in years! It still holds up storywise to how I remembered it but the clash of 2D and 3D animation techniques really dates it.

My Children will never stop watching Sinbad. They love it so much.

Bought for daughter who likes the sinbad stories in arabian nights. very enjoyable film and characters. i just wish sinbad was a bit less americanised! He starts as an arrogant pirate which confused daughter as couldnt understand why he was bad

Quality DVD - kids found the film boring though (age 5-7)

Per gli amanti del genere si tratta di un film di animazione veramente ben realizzato (considerando gli effetti disponibili nel 2003), anche se ha poco a che spartire con il Sinbad delle Mille e una notte.I personaggi sono gradevoli e ben combinati, la scenografia è studiata con cura (in particolare la città di Siracusa), la storia nel complesso è piacevole.Il film è stato realizzato in parte con tecniche classiche in parte utilizzando CG (appoggiandosi su un cluster di server Linux), ed alcune scene sono veramente efficaci (il mare, le sirene, le sabbie del Tartaro), anche se in alcuni punti si nota uno scollamento fra le due tecniche (nella scena del Roc ad esempio). I colori sono utilizzati senza parsimonia ed alcune scene complesse hanno un'ottima resa.Il CD contiene una serie di speciali, interviste, giochi. La qualità del video è ottima, il livello dell'audio (nella mia copia, almeno) non sempre uniforme, ma non crea grande disturbo.In sintesi, è un film che mi sento di raccomandare e non capisco come mai abbia avuto in genere un successo inferiore alle aspettative.

Il prodotto è arrivato con la consueta puntualità, integro. Ricordavo il film migliore di quanto non sia, la sceneggiatura è mooolto debole, alcuni animatori hanno lavorato meglio di altri (chi si è occupato delle animazioni del cane e di quelle di Eris ha fatto un buon lavoro). Ci sono sfondi suggestivi, ad esempio Siracusa in certi scorci è come ho sempre immaginato dovesse essere Numenor ("Il Silmarillion" di Tolkien).

Apart from the animation, hence the special visual effects of this animation, the film is rather banal though it has little to do with the original Sindbad the Sailor. It adds a supernatural evil world dominated by a woman that goes far beyond the story as we know it and even as we can dream it. The main story here is about the existence of a book of peace that establishes peace in the world. The supernatural evil being wants to steal it to create chaos and havoc. She manages at first and then Sinbad has to recuperate it.Yet the story adds three elements that give it some interesting dimension. The first one is a dog. Sinbad has a big and extremely faithful and frightening dog that can fight just like any other sailor. Sinbad is not a merchant he is a captain and he has the whole crew of his ship under his own command, including the dog who is also a perfect autonomous attacker..The second real change or addition is the fact that Sinbad has an extremely old and close friend and it looks and sounds like more than just a best friend. This best-er friend is ready to exchange his own life for that of Sinbad after the evil woman has stolen the book and Sinbad is accused of being the mastermind of the theft. But this best friend is about to get married to the daughter of the local ruler. So she does not exactly like the deal. She knows Sinbad has not stolen the book his best friend had brought in the first place, but she does not trust Sinbad who is supposed to go and recuperate it. So she goes along, incognito at first but very fast known of all and public.That’s the really funny part because she falls in love of course with that poor Sinbad who did not exactly fell for her at first sight, even if his dog did. But after the confrontation with the evil female supernatural being with whom Sinbad had a “truth or dare” game of some sort that this evil woman declared he had lost, Sinbad and his best friend’s fiancée have to go back. But unluckily for the evil woman he had told her if he did not get the book he would go back to save his friend. She did not believe it: “You lied!” But he does go back and he takes the place of his friend on the execution chopping block, which gives the lie to the evil woman who had called him a liar.Strangely enough this evil woman has honor and she comes and delivers the book since Sinbad had said the truth and thus had won the game.I let you discover the last twist that gives a perfect good ending in romantic colors and music to the film. It should be a good film for primary school kids, but beyond twelve you’d better abstain.Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
