The Spiritual Traveler: England, Scotland, Wales: The Guide to Sacred Sites and Pilgrim Routes in Britain

Especially good for interest in early Christianity
I think the book is very well researched, written, and laid out, I'm not quite sure why I expected differently, perhaps because of the stone circle on the front, but I thought it might be more geared to the ancient and pagan spiritual sites. Instead, while it includes prominent ones, a lot of ink is given to relating stories of various Christian saints and other church leaders, and the sites associated with them.

Great reading so far
The only reason I can't give this a 5 star rating is because I haven't gotten through it all. I like the path maps that show various pilgrimages and the stories about why certain places are considered sacred and spiritual. I am going to the UK this summer and plan on visiting some of these sights.

I just like these kind of books
I just like these kind of books. I just booked a trip to Scotland so I will be referring to this book a lot. I can't wait to get to Scotland and actually see some of these places I've been reading about.

Not Bad, Just Not For Me
This book covers things of interest that a "spiritual" traveler might want to see, but it's very generic. By "spiritual" it means Christian, pagan, and whatever. That is what makes this not very useful to me. It's so general as to be almost useless. If you are looking for information on specific spots, this might provide a good jumping off point. But you would almost certainly consult a secondary source to get in depth information. I bought this for an upcoming trip to England with an interest in sacred travel, but I won't be taking it with me.

Absolutely Amazing!
The book is phenomenal and I cannot wait to put it to good use on my next trip. It covers all sacred sites from the mound graves to Chinese temples. This book is written with a great deal of historical research and care, I love that Palmer does this without rendering the book unreadable. The b&b's, hostels, and other accommodations while cost-conscious are lovely and inviting. Again, I am totally in love with this travel guide.

More Than a Guide Book
This is more than a simple traveler's guide book. It provides the detailed history, significance and practices surrounding the sacred sites of Britain, including many lesser-known sites. The book gives the reader a foundation necessary for truly understanding and experiencing the sacred sites. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to visit Britain's sacred sites and come away with more than a snap-shot view.

Not what it says on the cover
I bought this because it says on the cover "Pilgrim routes". I would really like to have an authoritative text on pilgrim routes in Britain. Having got this I suspect it now would be a work of medieval scholarship not a modern book on pilgrimage or maybe they are genuinely lost.I understand that for something like 500 years people made pilgrimage to a huge number of shrines in the UK often using almost standard routes. What I am interested in was where exactly these routes ran as many of them are not along modern roads. So getting a book on these, I hoped at least to get some of the major ones in Britain! Not a chance, pilgrimage tradition is concentrated still on the shrines, the routes are modern ways linking a number of shrines, many of the shrines are modern. Simply if like me you are looking for historical pilgrimage routes, this book does not give them. As that is what seemed to set it out as different from other pilgrimage routes, I felt it did not live up to its cover. If you want to explore religious diversity within the UK in a relatively short time, this book would be fine, but realise the routes given here are tour itineraries not routes that other pilgrims have followed.
