Biography of Audie Murphy - comments from Elizaneth O'Brien
I liked this book as it gave a warts and all picture of this great American. It didn't go into too much detail of his "love of women" which was good as he was such a great hero and his good qualities, which far outweighed any bad qualities he may have had, were made clear.I could understand exactly how he felt when returning from the War and finding the shallowness of people, especially the Hollywood set, too much to take and why he reacted as he did - yet all through there was this kindness, gentleness and love of his family and true friends even if he did still 'womanise' and this was brought out in the book by Charles WhitinIg.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about AUdie Murphy.

A great man, who suffered much
IN American Hero, Charles Whiting chronicles the life of America's most decorated (for valor) soldier in our history. It does leave much unsaid and unanaylzed, but still gives a cogent narrative of his life. Most interesting is his post war struggles, shared to some degree by all combat soldiers, and carefully concealed during his life. A great man, who suffered much, his war years is the story of the American fighting man and his post war pain illuminates what war can do to people. That he became a movie star on his war record is too simple and here I think the author missed some things. It is true he got his start because of his record, but he was a better actor that most are willing to concede. His stardom came from personal qualities and the fact that the American moviegoing public took him to their hearts as an actor. You may want to see The Unforgiven, The Quiet American, The Red Badge of Courage, and some of his better B movies, such as No Name On the Bullet, where he plays the bad guy - sort of. I recomend this as a good introduction to Audie, his life and the issues of the American Fighting man.
