I purchased this item for my 9 month old grandson for Christmas. He loved it; as did we. Our whole family sat on the floor with him and played with it. It is colorful and and the gears move around without catching little fingers. We thought this item would be great for motor skills development. The noise was quite loud when in use but we continued to use it. After about two weeks of play; a black, oily substance started to come from the toy. We don't know exactly what the substance is so we took it away from him.Even though it is a neat little toy, we will be returning this item. I love the cute slogan "Monkey around with early engineering." I don't know if my son is really learning anything about engineering, but he definitely loves monkeying around with this toy.We got it for him when he was about 6 months old, and he very quickly figured out how to push the button to make it run, although he mostly enjoyed putting the pieces in his mouth. He's 10 months now, and in the last month, it's become clear that it's his favorite toy.He can play with the monkey almost exclusively for over an hour at a time, taking the gears on and off. He's even started to stack a couple. The middle peg is great, because it seems to be easiest for him to get the pieces on. He also likes to turn it over and play peek-a-boo with it. And, it seems to be a toy that will keep his attention as he learns more ways to combine the gears. I must say that I find it kinda fun too.I manage to tune out the music and monkey sounds that this makes pretty easily, even though my son keeps it running constantly. Maybe because it doesn't have a person talking like so many educational toys.I do wish it came with extra gears, but for the price (currently $14.98), I think it is a great buy.

I bought this for my 1 year old. Most yearlings like to take things apart and put back together, or nest cups, or take things in and out. This is a great toy to satisfy that desire. My yearling loves to take the gears on and off, stack them up and watch them work. The only downside I see is that there is no volume control. It is either off or on and pretty loud.Make sure to slide the button to "play" mode underneath. It comes in "demo" mode. 1 cycle of lights and gears turning is longer on the "play" mode.

This is a rare negative review for me and we are FREQUENT Amazon shoppers so please heed this warning: item arrived out of package and not working. Opened battery compartment and there was rust inside. Put new batteries in and the item still did not work. This was to be a toy for a long road trip with a one year old and it would have been perfect. Amazon, please investigate these toys or seller!

The only toy my son will actually sit still to play with... and not to mention it will keep him enthralled for up to an hour almost every time he plays with it!! It's the best!!! He is 13 months, has had it since his 1st birthday and it's been his go-to all time favorite toy since he got it. In fact, I have to put it up sometimes just so he will play with his other toys! And so he doesn't get tired of it too soon... because if I ever need to get something done, I just pull this out and he is happily occupied for a very long time. Lol

My 2 year old enjoys this and plays with it almost every day. I actually bought 2 of these so she would have additional gears to stack. I think that has increased the fun value of the toy a lot because she can make tall towers of gears and has a lot more options as far as where to put gears and how many. When she is done playing with this we store the gears in a small bag. Also, I chose this one over the other busy gears toy because this one allows for stacking.

Great toy to hold preschoolers' attention. Lots of variety in switching and stacking gears.Good brain work for thinking skills such as prediction, cause and effect, etc.Jungle music and sounds add fun and excitement.

The first one of these I ordered quit working after only two days so I returned it. The company contacted me and offered to send me a new one at no cost! I accepted their offer and the new one arrived overnight and has been working wonderfully for weeks, on just one set of batteries. My grandchildren love it and I will purchase many more as gifts!
