Second memory machine...
This machine is well worth the money. It is well made and takes minutes to hook-up and be in operation. Sound quality is very good and for these reasons I will recommend it...........

Worse Than Totally Useless, Unreliable Junk
I purchased this item on August 17, 2012. Today is December 29, 2012. Since receiving the product, I had no occasion to use its results until this morning - but since the date I received it, and after immediately hooking it up (I will not even enter here repetitive data already provided by other positive and negative reviewers about how just easy it is to hook up - it is, which for a product that does not work at all is totally beside the point). I have had recorders similar to this, which I have used in business constantly for over the last 25 years - during that 25 year period, I had only two Radio Shack telephone recorders - one lasted 16 years before failing, and the other nine years. BUT after the failure of a second machine in 25 years, I made the mistake of purchasing this useless machine because of the utter convenience of ordering from Amazon (to say nothing of Amazon's impeccable ordering and delivery, to say nothing of their return policies. To the point - I plugged in the machine and immediately tested it by placing it in the record mode, turned the volume up on the potentiameter controlling the speaker volume, and confirmed that the signal was being picked up by the unit. MY UTTERLY STUPID MISTAKE WAS THAT I DID NOT CONFIRM THAT THE SIGNAL WAS BEING RECORDED! So all these months, when the tape ran out, I turned it over, and over, and over....all these months. This morning I had my first need since hooking up the unit to listen back to a segment of a conversation that was recorded yesterday, in order to confirm certain aspects of the content of the call. It was then that I discovered that even though the telephone signal was transmitted to the recorder, and even though the tape had been running every time my phone (or another on the same line) was picked up, NOTHING WAS BEING RECORDED ON THE TAPE. And the tape was fully absent of any signal on both sides of the cassette tape. Enough said. It is far too late to return the unit to Amazon, and I do not intend to spend what will probably be totally futile hours in following up with the product's U.S. distributor, or beyond the pale, the Chinese manufacturer. As already indicated, I am an over the top enthusiastic supporter of Amazon's practices in all respects. Two more points - First, I consider absolutely invaluable the user comments which Amazon encourages and posts, no matter if positive or negative!Given the negative comments about this product which are posted as of this date, all I can say is that either there were no such negative reviews posted when I purchased the product, or even more egregious, I may have ignored the reviews! If you will look at the many reviews for such items as toasters or toaster ovens, for instance, you may finally base your purchase not on the effectiveness of the product, but on the liklihood that it won't burn down your house! Good grief - but that's the way it is, and the information provided is invaluable. The second, and last point follows. My use of these machines has always been legal, according to the two states in which I have used them, Colorado, and now Texas - anyone else using my phone to which the machines have been connected, AND any corresponding other phones on the same line, have always been informed that their telephone conversations on the line were ALWAYS recorded - the law in both states is very clear in indicating that recording telephone conversations (without any announcement to the party being called) is fully legal, as long as one party on the line is aware of the recording in progress - of course, some states have other laws, and in the case of calls to such states (of which I always informed myself), either the called party was notified that the conversation was being recorded (yes, some hung up!), or the recorder was disconnected. And of course, 800 and such numbers are not recorded until it is determined where is the person answering the call. The only time I have had a problem is some twenty years ago in Colorado, when I called Mountain Bell (when they were still in operation!), and after receiving the message on the Mountain Bell line that the call was being recorded by them for security and training purposes, I told the operator that the call was also being recorded on my end.....there was quite a pause, and then she SCREAMED, 'You can't do that!!!!"......I asked her to check with her supervisor, and when she came back a couple of minutes later, we continued the business to be accomplished. That is all!

I have used these for several years. The only fault I have found is that in time they will fail and then need to be replaced. It is quite possible that I am doing something wrong that is causing their failure, but I don't think so.

Makes Recording Telephone Calls Easy
Those digital answering machines are great, but when you want to archive a call for future reference without taking up memory on the machine, there's no easy way. I keep this recorder hooked up on the same phone line as the answering machine and the tape starts recording whenever the machine picks up. I've tried both the high and low tape speeds and decided, as telephone calls aren't exactly high fidelity, the low speed is just fine and doubles the tape capacity to about an hour per side of a C-60 cassette. It's well worth the small investment.
