How does the base stay stationary?

Yes, I filled the base with stone. You cd also use sand. Works well.

Can you change the shower head

It appears to be a standard shower head which would allow you to change it. Haven't tried it, but it appears like you could do so.

There is a valve at the hose connection and I can't connect my hose to it?

That is not the hose connection that is where you can rinse off your feet. If you look at the illustration you will see the valve you are speaking of which is about 18" up from the base the piece that inserts into base is where the hose connection is located. It is a tee with a female connection that a threaded. piece of PVC screws into with a hose adapter, either you assembled it incorrectly or you did not get the correct parts. Expand your view of the shower and look at the illustration and you will see the hose connection.
